4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

Oh, boy, yes. *points wordlessly at icon*

As for how Charles Xavier became my One True (Fictional) Love, that's a bit of a long story.

I started watching X-Men: The Animated Series around 1993, and the first episode I saw was Deadly Reunions. I can actually tell you that my first thoughts on my future beloved were "who's that guy telepathically tormenting the hottie in the red and purple outfit? And why is he wearing that awful green suit?" So, you know, not exactly love at first sight *g*.

If you'd asked me who my favourite mutant was in those early days, I'd have told you it was Magneto, and it would have been true. He won me over in minutes with his sexy voice acting and his tortured past. But Charles had my interest, too, and by the time they were running around the Savage Land fighting dinosaurs together, I'd started to wonder about what made him tick. (This was also around the time I invented slash fiction all by myself.) The Dark Phoenix Saga made me even more interested.

A few years passed, and I had a geeky friend who was able to lend me some comic books - including a reprint of Uncanny X-Men #12, which is Charles' origin story. And I think by then I was already hooked. When I went on a work experience trip to Melbourne in 1996, I went to Minotaur and bought everything in the back issue bin or on the racks that had Charles Xavier on the cover, and then I knew it was love. (This was around the time of Onslaught, so at least he was on the covers sometimes. Even if the story as a whole wasn't very good, it had plenty of interesting stuff in it for a budding Xavier fangirl.) By them time I actually discovered the internet in 1997, I was disappointed to find out that there was almost no fanfiction about him. (Thank goodness for Alara Rogers, or I might have wandered off into some other fandom, feeling sad.)

I think that covers the how, but it doesn't cover the why. As for that, well, there are a lot of reasons. Like all kinds of love, it accumulates over time. Because he genuinely wants to make the world a better place. Because he's Lawful Good for values of 'lawful' and 'good' that other people find extremely confusing. Because he'll forgive his enemies and open his door to anyone. (Because he's genuinely that compassionate, and also because turning away a potentially useful tool would be unwise.) Because he always has at least three reasons for doing anything. Because he wants to be a teacher, not a general, no matter how much he keeps screwing that up. Because he believes killing people never fixed anything. Because of the time he gave Wolverine demerits. And more recently: because Patrick Stewart. (And James McAvoy, who does not have the voice but has the right colour eyes. So I can find it in my heart to love that version, too.)

For the past month, I've been back writing bits and pieces of X-Men stories. It's like he's never been out of my head.

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

I don't think anyone is interested in me listing my favourite characters for all forty of those fandoms, are they? So let's just stick with my top ten.

X-Men: Almost every X-Men story I've written (the exceptions are some drabbles, a 'common people' comicverse story and a remix) has Charles Xavier in it. He's not just my favourite X-Men character to write, but my favourite fictional person full stop. I've also written a lot of Magneto.

Farscape: This is an unusual one for me, in that instead of just sticking with my favourites I've written most of the characters at some point. The Farscape Friday drabble community encouraged me to stretch myself during the time I was most actively writing it. My clear favourites to write are Crais, Scorpius and Zhaan, but I had a lot of fun writing Harvey and Braca, not to mention Talyn and Sikozu. I have more favourite characters in Farscape than any other fandom.

Babylon 5: I am all about the Centauri and the Narn in this fandom, and Londo and G'Kar talking to each other is one of my favourite things to write in the whole world. (They may or may not be having tentacle sex at the same time.) I've also written lots of Vir, and I think I've doubled the number of Na'Toth stories on the web single-handedly. I enjoyed writing Bester, although I've only done so once thus far. Some day I must write something about Kosh, but Vorlons are difficult.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I am all about Giles and Ethan and also the Trio, especially Andrew Wells. Some day I will write a story that has Giles and Andrew interacting, even.

Doctor Who: I think this is the only fandom where I don't really have a set of favourite characters. Or, rather, I have so many of them it's a meaningless list. I mean, I love all of the Doctor, and I have more than a dozen favourite companions and also the Master. What I enjoy most is having all of that available to play with, so I love writing stories that cross eras and have characters who never met in canon interacting.

due South: I am a Vecchio girl all the way in this fandom. Not that I don't love Fraser and intead Kowalski, I just can't see myself writing anything longer than a ficlet that doesn't have RayV in it.

Alias: First Generation Spies 4 Eva! Jack, Sloane and Irina are my equal favourites.

The Authority: I love the Doctor, and by the Doctor I mean Jeroen, not whoever they replaced him with. *sadface*

Transformers: I am a predictable Starscream fangirl, and almost everything I've ever written or planned to write in this fandom has him in it. I'm very attached to Megatron, too, though, and one of these days I need to write more about Soundwave and Galvatron and Cyclonus.

Blake's 7: Blake and Avon are my characters of choice here. I may love Blake slightly more, I think, but they're both fun to write. The reason I've never written more in this fandom is that there's so much fic about those two already, it seems unnecessary for me to add any.

2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

I think I'm just going to copy-paste my AO3 stats here.

Quite a few of those one-off fandoms are accounted for by drabbles/ficlets/crossovers. It's probably worth noting that if you combine all the X-Men universes together, I've written a total of forty-one stories about mutants, making it the clear winner. As for whether I still write in these fandoms, well, I haven't posted must of anything for a while now. I never really leave fandoms, though, and if I've written something more than once or twice there's a good chance I have other ideas I'd like to get around to. I definitely have more X-Men, Babylon 5, Transformers and Doctor Who stories in me.

Well, hey, why not? (Not that I've posted anything in ages. I am writing First Class fanfic, but it keeps developing a plot. And inconsiderate customers keep ringing me up in the middle of sentences.)

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

My first fanfic was X-Men comicverse, posted back in 2000. I discovered fanfiction within weeks of getting online in 1997. I don't actually remember whether I found X-Files or X-Men fanfic first. Somewhere in between looking through episode guides and newsgroups, I discovered that some people wrote down their stories about TV and comic book characters instead of just telling them to themselves in their heads. This was obviously the BEST IDEA EVA.

One way another, X-Files fandom failed to hold my interest, but X-Men comics drew me in more and more. Soon I was lurking on OTL and CFAN's message boards and trying to write stories of my own. I spent three years doing that before I actually posted something, which puts the more recent droughts into perspective. The reason for why that fandom and not any of the others probably boils down to the guy in the icon *g*. It was also a lot easier in those days for me to catch up on comics than it was to catch up on television - I'd barely heard of DVDs and I didn't have easy access to a VCR at university. (Avoiding the common room was my other hobby.) On the other hand, I could go to Minotaur and Comics 'R Us and buy piles and piles of X-Men back issues for relatively little money.

When I see 'kickass', I think 'kicking arse and taking names'. (To give that part of anatomy its proper British/Australian spelling *g*.) So this is a list of female characters who are awesome and who might also literally kick you.

1) Leela

Whenever someone complains about Amy Pond's short skirts, I think of Leela's leathers and roll my eyes. As with Amy, the potentially exploitative nature of Leela's outfits did not stop her being a great character. While she wasn't the first action girl in Doctor Who - we can't forget Sara Kingdom or Jo Grant's spy skillz - her warrior upbringing and willingness to kill provided an interesting philosophical contrast with the Doctor. Her childlike sense of wonder gave her more depth than many companions got to have, and it was always interesting to watch her learn about the universe. Honourable mention: to Ace, for killing Daleks and Cybermen.

2) Ororo Munroe

I'll always be grateful to Chris Claremont's obsession with powerful female characters. Not only did it give us a vastly upgraded Jean Grey and the introduction of Mystique, it provided us with Storm. My favourite X-woman channels both the strength and wildness of a hurricane and the serenity at its centre.

3) Irina Derevko

There are a lot of arse-kicking women in Alias, and most of them are related to Irina Derevko. A Russian agent turned freelance who has grown from action girl to action woman and spymaster. Irina Derevko is indeed The Man.

4) Helena Bertinelli

The DC universe is not short on women who kick arse, but I love Helena because she can be a great anti-heroine, and there are never enough of those. Huntress walks the line between superheroine and costumed vigilante, and you do not want to get on the wrong side of that crossbow.

5) Olivia Dunham

Superpowered FBI agent and leading lady of Fringe, she also looks great in a fedora. Don't make her shoot you.

Apparently the band have decided to record and release the theme tune after the strong positive response this received.

Day 22 – A Who-Related Fan-Site

My regular hang-out is Gallifrey Base, successor to the now defunct Outpost Gallifrey. It does not have the best reputation, but I find it quite pleasant as I usually stick to the book, audio and toy forums and stay out of arguments.

The information source I visit most often is The Doctor Who Reference Guide, an astonishing chronological list of just about every story produced in any medium, with summaries for a high percentage of them. Incredibly useful if you're trying to figure out when any adventure occurs in relation to any other! The Wiki is also developing nicely. (No thanks to me; I only ever edit the page about tea and how much sugar the Doctor puts in it.)

Day 21 – Your Doctor Who OTP

I am not really OTP about the Doctor and most people, even by my very loose standards of the term. Sure, I ship him - with Romana, the Master, Cameca, Reinette, River Song, etc. - but with a single exception I don't think he should spend the rest of his live(s) with anyone. No, my first OTP is ...

Doctor/TARDIS

There she was, minding her own business in the repair yard, when some idiot who had NO IDEA how to fly her and didn't even acknowledge her sentience at first stole her away from Gallifrey. No wonder she refused to go anywhere he wanted for the first few centuries. And yet, after that unpromising beginning, she's become his truest companion. Over time they've bonded, and no matter how much rough treatment he puts her through or how often she lands him in the worst possible situations, they are true to each other. Everyone else may leave the Doctor eventually, by choice or not, but the TARDIS never will.

But of course not all Doctor Who 'ships involve the Doctor. There are a few others I'm very fond of.

Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright

Even from the beginning, you can see that there's a spark between Ian and Barbara - if there wasn't, he might not have gone along with her 'let's follow our student home!' plan in the first place. Yet it's during their travels in the TARDIS that they really bond and ultimately find true love. Extended canon holds that they got married after returning to their own era, and I refuse to believe that anything else could have happened. Maybe they told everyone at Coal Hill they eloped and went on a very long honeymoon.

And of course in the modern era we have ...

Amy Pond/Rory Williams

This one has spoilers for Season Five, of course. )

Finally, there's ...

Jack Harkness/Everyone

Because you know he 'ships it, too.

Day 20 – The Character Who Is Most Like You

I don't know that I'm really brave enough to be a companion, but I do aspire to be Evelyn Smythe when I grow up. I'm sort of on track, and have twenty-five years to get the rest of that PhD by the time I'm her age. (My field of history is Italian rather than English, but never mind.) And I do love the Sixth Doctor and want to feed him cake.

(Since this is a short response, I'm just going to diverge from the subject for a moment and say that, while Mel doesn't annoy me as much as she does some people, her determination to make the Doctor drink carrot juice and ride an exercise bike is stupid. Even assuming there are health risks for Time Lords carrying the odd extra kilo - that's a slightly dubious contention for humans - it's not as though he's going to have time to get diabetes or clogged arteries anyway. In a few years he's going to turn into Sylvester McCoy. Chocolate is not a serious risk for someone who spends his life running away from Daleks, for Rassilon's sake.)

Day 19 – The Scene That Made Your Cry the Most

There's two that make me tear up every single time, not because they're sad but because they're so emotional. One is the end of The Curse of Fenric when Ace dives into the ocean and then gets out and walks away, dripping wet, arm around the Doctor, cleansed of Fenric at last. The other is in Gridlock when the roof opens and the sun shines on the BASKET OF TINY KITTENS and they look up at the big light in the sky that they've never seen before.

There are a couple of others from Season Five that may join that list - I haven't been able to rewatch Vincent and the Doctor yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's something that sets me off reliably. The other is spoilers for 'The Big Bang'. ) I am bewildered that there are people who found Season Five emotionally uninvolving when it had things like that in it.

Day 16 – Your Favourite Who-Related Fanfic

That is not a question I could possibly answer, even with a list. However, instead, let me link you to the first story in the fandom that I remember reading. In hindsight, this short, silly fic was one of the things that got me interested in the show and convinced me that it might be for me:

Doctor Who and the Board Game of Death by nostalgia

In which the Eighth Doctor and his companions play Monopoly, and it turns out about how you'd expect. It is book!fic but you don't need to know Anji or Fitz in order to appreciate it.

Day 15 – Favourite Who-Related Tumblr

... so I guess this meme originally started out on Tumblr, then. As luck would have it, the only reason I have ever been to Tumblr or even know what it is is Let Zygons Be Zygons. It was made by [personal profile] calapine and is full of awesome Who-related pictures. Here are some of my favourites:

- Jon Pertwee on an elephant.

- Matt Smith eating a hat.

- Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant are dorks.

- Peter Davison and his companions are also dorks, in twenties fancy dress.

- Tom Baker and Lalla Ward wearing The Scarf. Awwwwwww.

Day 14 – The Villain Who Scared You the Most

Easiest question to answer to far - the Krynoid. The Seeds of Doom episode four is the first Doctor Who I remember seeing as a child. Not only did I flee half way through, I was put off the show for my entire childhood. Even into my teens I would leave the room whenever I heard the theme song. (Yes, there is a certain irony there.)

It's not the fifty-foot tall monster towering over the mansion that scared me, but the seed pod and what it did to its human victims. To this day, it's one of the most frightening concepts in series history. It's the same thing that's scary about the Cybermen or the gasmask zombies, only in some ways its even worse because of the way the Kryoid co-opts the local plants and wants nothing more than to destroy all animal life, everywhere.

Because of my early exposure, not even the Weeping Angels will ever match Keeler's transformation for sheer horror as far as I'm concerned.

Day 13 – Your Favourite Villain

Curiously, Doctor Who hasn't accumulated that many recurring villains to go with its many recurring monsters. The Rani and the Black Guardian turned up a couple of times each, and there's always Davros. Yet when it comes to real staying power you have to look to the Master.

While I'm a big fan of John Simm's delightfully loopy performance, the original incarnation is still my favourite Doctor Who villain. Charming and debonair, he's the perfect foil to the Third Doctor. Although far less unbalanced than he's going to get later, the Master is already thoroughly evil - as [personal profile] selenak put it recently, he's willing to commit genocide just to annoy his ex. (And yes, I think the Doctor and the Master were an item back in the day. Even given the Tenth Doctor's post-Time War angst, I am not sure there's any heterosexual explanation for the way David Tennant and John Simm play it.)

But for all that the Third Doctor knows that the Master is evil and is disgusted by his behaviour, he can't quite let go of the affection completely. Jon Pertwee always brings that bit extra to his performance when Delgado is on screen - just thinking of the sword fight in The Sea Devils (which the Doctor interrupts in order to steal the Master's lunch) always makes me grin.

Luckily, I have something new and Doctor Who related to post photos of:

Amy!!!

She even has green eyes and her necklace. Alas, I don't have an Eleven (waiting for the Eleven Doctors box to be released here) or a Rory (waiting for Character Options to make one) as yet. Still, Ms. Pond need not want for company as she waits for her boys to arrive ...

Day 11 – Your Favourite Season

This is a tough one - but in the end it has to be Season Fourteen. The closest thing it has to a weak serial is The Hand of Fear and even that has it charms, especially Sarah Jane's farewell scene. (The proposed Foreign Legion story in which she was meant to die might well have been better at the time, but I'm very glad they didn't make it now that Sarah has gone on to such greatness.)

Apart from that, it's all downright wonderful - Hinchliffe excels himself in his last year as producer, and while I know it caused problems later I just can't regret his decision to overspend wildly to make things look better. How could I not love a season that has The Masque of Mandragora, The Deadly Assassin, The Talons of Weng-Chiang AND The Robots of Death?

(The Robots of Death is my favourite Hinchcliffe era story, in case you hadn't guessed. It has Chris Boucher, David Collings and homicidal robots. Of death.)

Um. Since it is quite late, and a photo of my DVD/book collection would not actually be that interesting, and most of my action figures are currently in a box on a high shelf, have this terrible photo of the nearest thing I could find:

That is a photo of my collect-and-connect K1 Robot.

Quite often I look at it, or at my two Sea Devils or my Zygon or my robots OF DEATH and am astonished that I get to be a Doctor Who fan at a time when such things exist.
