To everyone who told me I had to watch Dexter because I would love it? You were so, so right. Just finished watching the pilot episode and it is made from awesome. I am glad I picked it for the other show to watch in between the Battlestar Galactica episodes I am still catching up on.

While I certainly do not approve of cutting up people or animals, it's hard not to like our anti-hero. I think what really won me over is how bewildering Dexter finds the behaviour of 'normal' people - I'm sure we've all been there at one time or another. I would say I wanted to give him hugs, but I doubt that Dexter would appreciate them.

Also, Deb = win.

Dexter has this really odd effect: you're appalled at what he does and his glee when he does it (not to mention, a little grossed out---try watching Dexter with dinner on your knee). But then he'll do something like gaze bewilderingly at someone who's upset with him, give people and the nice file lady donuts, smile at someone he loves-but-doesn't, and then you're lost. Even though you can't forget he likes cutting people up into pieces, you do want to cuddle him and comfort him. From a safe distance.

I was pretty leery about watching the show as well, but (and I know this sounds silly) the gorgeous credits won me over. The filming is just so very beautiful.

I knew you'd like it.*g* I've written reviews for both seasons, which you can find under the "dexter" tag at my lj.

It's a very disturbing series. Watch it!

Dexter is totally fabulous, and that urge to give him hugs will not go away. Indeed, in later times you will find yourself going, "omg no Dexter be careful AAAAGGGGH" -- and realize that you're rooting for THE SERIAL KILLER.

Exactly! I picked up the first book early on, because I'd read a pre-release review of it, and was enchanted by the idea of making the serial killer the protagonist.

Just as a btw, if you're at all interested in the books, I enjoyed the first one, the second to a lesser degree, and the third not at all, because of some narrative choices. The prose is kind of workmanlike, so it's the concept and some of the twists that originally hooked me. And after you're through the first season, the books and the show diverge widely (well, before, but the basic storyline is there), so they aren't spoilery for the show -- at least so far.

Hmmmm. For the first major storyline, I think both the show and the books made some interesting choices. It would have been interesting to see the second book developed, and in some ways they still could, but I enjoyed the second season's storyline, as well. And I didn't like the choices the author made in the third book, at all, so...

Now, I want to see Dexter even more. My friend told me about it and it sounds pretty awesome.
