Squee!
To everyone who told me I had to watch Dexter because I would love it? You were so, so right. Just finished watching the pilot episode and it is made from awesome. I am glad I picked it for the other show to watch in between the Battlestar Galactica episodes I am still catching up on.
While I certainly do not approve of cutting up people or animals, it's hard not to like our anti-hero. I think what really won me over is how bewildering Dexter finds the behaviour of 'normal' people - I'm sure we've all been there at one time or another. I would say I wanted to give him hugs, but I doubt that Dexter would appreciate them.
Also, Deb = win.

He's an extraordinary character, and the writers have achieved a remarkable effect with him.

The credits are amazing - the most beautiful and disturbing opening sequence I've ever seen.
The filming is just so very beautiful.
I am just itching to vid it, even if it might mean staring at dismembered bodies for hours on end.

And you are never wrong about these things! When I bought the DVDs, they gave me a free t-shirt. I almost refused it on the grounds that I hadn't even seen the show yet, but now I am glad that I accepted and can walk around with the blood red logo adorning my chest ...
I've written reviews for both seasons, which you can find under the "dexter" tag at my lj.
I shall look forward to reading when spoilers are less of an issue.

It's an incredible trick they've pulled off there - intellectually, the viewer knows he shouldn't be left to roam around cutting people up. But emotionally, you want the protagonist to succeed.

Just as a btw, if you're at all interested in the books, I enjoyed the first one, the second to a lesser degree, and the third not at all, because of some narrative choices. The prose is kind of workmanlike, so it's the concept and some of the twists that originally hooked me. And after you're through the first season, the books and the show diverge widely (well, before, but the basic storyline is there), so they aren't spoilery for the show -- at least so far.

I am planning to track at least the first one down. Someone I know IRL was saying last night that he thought the series should have followed the plot of the books more closely. I'll be curious to see what I think.

I highly recommend it, as long as you don't have a problem with blood and dismembered bodies.

I am seven episodes in, and I adore everything about it. Dexter is my new TV boyfriend! I definitely have meta thoughts brewing beyond just 'squee' so I'll try to write them down tomorrow.
