In this thrilling instalment, even more daddy issues. More than that, it's all about trust and connections.

The central moment of the episode is when Peter uses his powers fully for the first time and realises that it's his connections to others that give him that power. Paradoxically, Claude's advice - and his, er, dramatic way of encouraging Peter to fly - provide the key to this realisation.

Elsewhere, Hiro has to convince his father that his big sister is the right person to take over the family business so he can keep trying to save the world. In doing so, he proves not only that his sister is more suited to the job anyway, but that she's not the only smart one in the family *g*. (And oh, Ando, you are such a dork. Have you ever even spoken to a girl? In your entire life?)

Sylar is gloriously evil, using Sandra's trusting nature to inveigle his way into her house and score several glasses of iced tea while he plots to kill her. (I was terrified something bad would happen to Mr. Muggles. And it's not like I even like the little fluffball, particularly, but bad things happening to animals always upsets me.) My entirely predictable love for Mr. Bennet - evil writers, teasing us with his first name! - grows by the episode. One moment he's storming through the door with a gun to save his wife, the next he's having his 'friend' mindwipe her. He lies to his daughter about everything, but you never doubt that he loves her. You're so right, Selena, he is just like a blend of Jack and Sloane. Have you, perchance, written the obvious Alias crossover ...?

Meanwhile, Claire visits some imaginary manatees so that she can see her real mother. I cracked up when she told Zach she'd always imagined her parents living in a New York penthouse. Hey, she was half right! I can only imagine the explosion this must have caused in fandom at the time.

Claude demonstrates to Peter that he can't trust Simone by showing that Simone still cares for Isaac. Meanwhile, nobody should trust Isaac because he's still talking to Mr. Bennet. (I did wonder how he got away from Primatech so easily ...)

Back in Las Vegas, it's herself and her other half that Niki can't trust. I raised an eyebrow at Mr. Linderman's manipulation of the justice system - surely Jessica's assault on the psychologist and guards has to count for something? - but then we obviously don't know the full story about Linderman.

One of my favorite moments in the series to date. I love watching Peter and Claude together: the opposition of young, dreamy, idealistic innocent and old, bitter, pragmatic grouch never fails to amuse me.

And it's such a *Peter* realization, too: "You're wrong! I have to remember them! How they make me feel..." He really is an empath, above and beyond simply absorbing powers. I love that he refuses to do as Claude says, refuses to shut others off: "The people I love are *not* a distraction!" and that's exactly what helps him to access his powers, in the end.

My entirely predictable love for Mr. Bennet - evil writers, teasing us with his first name! - grows by the episode.

I never thought I'd love Mr. Bennet as much as I do now. I thought the actor was brilliant, but never felt much affection for him as a character until much later in the series.

I cracked up when she told Zach she'd always imagined her parents living in a New York penthouse.

In the earlier episode, when they're looking up the details of the fire online, Zach says, "Hey. Maybe you have a rich, eccentric uncle." Claire replied (with an eyeroll) "Great. An uncle."

We should have seen it coming. :-)

Paradoxically, Claude's advice - and his, er, dramatic way of encouraging Peter to fly - provide the key to this realisation.

It's a great scene, but it never fails to baffle me how fandom in their ensuing Claude characteristion overlooked that he wasn't kidding when saying that Peter's death if Peter hadn't been able to access his powers would also have been okay with him as a solution. Because there was no way he could have known Peter had self healing from Claire as an alternative to flying from Nathan.

In doing so, he proves not only that his sister is more suited to the job anyway, but that she's not the only smart one in the family *g*.

True! Smart kids, they are, both of them.

And oh, Ando, you are such a dork. Have you ever even spoken to a girl? In your entire life?

Apparantly not, if his behaviour with Niki and Kimiko is anything to go by...

Behold my multiple crossovers. (http://selenak.livejournal.com/298178.html) Alias is included. Though no, HRG does not get to meet either of those gentlemen. Anyway, I knew you'd see it, too!

I can only imagine the explosion this must have caused in fandom at the time.

If the summaries at [livejournal.com profile] heroes_fics is anything to go buy, it still causes exlosions, because the angry Peter/Claire 'shippers still beginn their disclaimers with stating "If I owned Heroes, Distractions would not have happened." Pfff. I have no pity, people. But then, I think Claire's genetic connections are a nifty plot element.

Claude demonstrates to Peter that he can't trust Simone by showing that Simone still cares for Isaac.

One of those moments when you see Peter displaying not empathy but male idiocy and Petrelli possessiveness, because honestly, Simone being willing to have dinner with her ex whom she lived with two long years is hardly the proof of "all people suck". Also? Note that Peter never ever attempts to contact Simone or send her as much as a note to say he's a) alive and b) trying to get this power thing into grip. She has to get her news about him from Nathan, who doesn't that much more, either, but at least has seen Peter post-coma. From which we learn: Peter Petrelli is not yet ready to be anyone's boyfriend.
