andraste: Helpful Doctor (Second Doctor)

So, this season of Doctor Who has come to an end! I thought the last episode was the weakest part of an overall good season. Complete waste of Belinda (something that was a problem with the whole season unfortunately), far too talky, climax happened much too early we spent the last twenty minutes on something that should have probably been an entire season and left a bunch of threads dangling that should probably have been resolved already. Oh well, RTD has always sucked at finales. I'm one of those people who doesn't even like The Parting of the Ways much, although I have a weird soft spot for Army of Ghosts/Doomsday largely because it pleases my fangirl heart to see the Daleks and Cybermen fight.

For this season we've got Lux, The Well, The Story & The Engine and The Interstellar Song Contest so I'd still say I loved it as a whole even though the end wasn't great. But on to the spoilery part!

Somewhere out there, RTD is laughing to himself seeing that he's got the entire internet wound up again with this latest regeneration. But I, for one, am all in favour of Billie Piper!Sixteen ... always assuming that's even what's happening. Rose was never my favourite, but it was never her performance that I had an issue with. Piper was terrific as the Moment in Day of the Doctor so I'm sure she can engage me playing our favourite Time Lord rather than a nineteen-year-old human girl. And also it's just really funny and delightful to me that someone can now go from companion to Doctor. Maybe she should regenerate into Freema Agyeman next!

I think there's every chance this will be another brief incarnation - we know it's likely to be a while before Disney decide if they're putting up more money, so while the scripts for Season Three already exist they're not going to be able to move into production without having determined the budget. I honestly thought we'd just get the regeneration flare and leave that as the cliffhanger, but I think it was much smarter for RTD to get in touch with an actor he knows well and is on good terms with who also now has the kind of career where he can say 'we don't know when we're going to be doing the next one, can you come back and do a special or two in a few months or a year after we work out if we have money?' I'm sorry to see Gatwa go after only two seasons, but there's no way he could hang around waiting for Disney to decide if they want to pay for more of this or not.

As usual a segment of fandom is in hysterics about the show being cancelled, to which I say that I will break into Sylvester McCoy's house, steal his hat and eat it if we don't have Doctor Who episodes in the next three years. If Disney decides they're out, the worst that will happen is the BBC deciding to rethink how many episodes they do and how often and if they bother to keep filming in 4K. We live in an era where no intellectual property is allowed to rest, there is not a chance in hell the BBC will just leave a narrative perpetual motion machine lying idle when they can retool it and launch it again if they don't think the last version was successful enough. I am far more concerned that someone will decide that they need a straight brunette white man in the lead role because it's 'safer' than that the show will stop happening altogether any time soon.

(Although if they have to have a brunette white man - Colin Morgan is old enough now and we've never had an Irish Doctor. I'd be OK with that.)

Anyway, whatever happens next I await it with interest!

I agree with most of that. It's been the best series for quite a while, so it's a pity that the last episode was so unsatisfactory as it's probably what people will tend to remember.

I am shocked we hadn't heard about the spoiler in advance, but yes, it's everywhere. I'm so disappointed that Ncuti is done already. :( He is fabulous as the Doctor!!!

(And wow, I get to use one of my old, old icons on this reply.)
