Immortal X-Men #10
Jan. 22nd, 2023 01:34 amIt will surprise nobody to learn that I have been waiting on the edge of my chair for this issue the entire time this series has been running. I am not disappointed!
On the one hand: nothing we didn't already know about Charles Xavier (well, nothing I didn't already know, I'm sure there are plenty of readers who can use a quick run-down of all this.) On the other hand: <3 <3 <3 this is an excellent issue about why he's my favourite fictional person.
In particular I appreciate the way this era has positioned him in a trinity with Moira and Erik as the one who desperately wants to balance things so that the humans and the mutants can all win, no matter what he has to do or who he has to screw over in order to achieve that.
Because as always Charles Xavier is the one person on the planet who read The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas and started asking questions like 'but how many forsaken children exactly are we talking about here?' and 'while we're on the subject how are we defining 'child' and also 'forsaken'' and 'are they looking for volunteers?' and 'do you think five would be enough?' He's right, everyone should be terrified of him!
But not of Sinister in his body. This is a wonderful call-back to Mike Carey's run and all of Fabian Nicieza's stories about Charles and Cain and what Sinister was even doing with them back in New Mexico, so it's terrific to see all of that finally pay off! But at the same time, we all remember how this ploy worked out for Cassandra Nova, right? Essex is going to need a bit more than a catsuit and a Cerebro helmet to pretend to be Charles in the long run. (My dream: Cassandra gets to be the one to unmask Sinister. She's in an x-team these days, it's kind of her job to be useful to Krakoa!)
I've seen a lot of speculation that Fall of X is going to be about shuffling Xavier off Krakoa somehow now that Moira's defected and Magneto is dead, and I am curious about if the solution to Sinister is going to be throwing the both of them in the hole while they're in the same body. It's not like Charles wouldn't jump on that particular grenade if he felt like he had to - never forget that when he's making a list of people to screw over to make the world a better place, his own name is always at the top of the list, as a matter of principle.
