Doctor Who Is Ruined Forever!

You know, probably I should feel bad about all the sexist nonsense posted since Jodie Whittaker was announced as the new Doctor. But the truth is that I have not had this much fun rolling around in misogynist tears since Free! was on. The complainers are just so angry and impotent and convinced that the silent majority agrees with them! Since they've already lost and can't actually accomplish anything other than a lot of pointless bleating, even the worst things they say just make me want to point and laugh even harder.

My favourite bit of misogyny so far is the guy who tweeted RadioFreeSkaro: "Shocking decision. No Doctor Who should be wank fodder." Partly because it sums up so many faulty assumptions in so few characters. All women are sex objects, and that's all they're good for! No men are, because men are subjects! Straight women, gay men and bi/pan people do not exist! But mostly because of the deluge of delightful responses he received before he deleted the tweet, often accompanied by shirtless pictures of earlier Doctors.

Because buddy, I hate to tell you this, but that ship has sailed. It sailed so long ago that it already circumnavigated the globe and returned to Spain with only eighteen of its original crew, then got refitted and sailed for a few more decades before sinking with all hands.

(That metaphor got away from me a bit, but the Victoria was a great old ship. The Doctor should go see what happened to it some time. And then take their shirt off.)

I think this experience (and the exact reverse) is going to become a common one in fandom *g*.

I have very much enjoyed being older than most of the complainers on FB - it's been a delight to go in and say "I've been a fan since 1974 and I'm so happy about Jodie Whittaker." I was so ready for angry "You're not a real fan!!!" type comments but I think I scared them off with my grey hair or something.

So disappointed in Peter Davison, though Colin Baker's public (but so gentle) spanking was lovely.

I have only been a fan since 2004 (since I was actively terrified of Doctor Who as a child, but any time someone says I'm not a real fan, I just ask them about some obscure point of Big Finish continuity until they go away :).

I rolled my eyes at Davison - are THIRTEEN DUDES somehow not enough male role models to be going on with??? - but it was nice to be reminded once again why I love Colin Baker.

Whoa. You're right.

I too have been pretty gleeful. And even more gleeful about returning to Who! Man, what a magical fandom that is (and large as well as old enough for quality authors, which will make a nice change of pace from Supergirl when I stop watching next season).

Doctor Who such a huge and old fandom that there's always something I want to read, even if it's not about the pairing/dynamic I went looking for. My latest petty complaints are the realative dearth of Sixth Doctor/Master fic and the sad lack of pegging in Twelve/Missy, but at least I will never run out of Doctor/Master stories of some kind.

I poked the Supergirl tag on AO3 a times, but it is clearly Baby's First Fandom for a lot of people. (Which is great for them, because something has to be a fan's first fandom! But it makes it a lot less interesting for someone who's been reading fanfic for twenty years.)
