Warning: only hilarious if you enjoy pointing and laughing at rampant misogyny. Which I do, when it's over something as trivial and ridiculous as a swimming anime. (The homophobia is also rampant, because that is how these guys roll.)
A summary for people who don't follow anime news and/or live under rocks: Koyami, a studio known for making shows about cute girls doing cute things, has made a series called Free!, which is about cute boys doing cute things. And taking their shirts off all the time. This has made some entitled male fans very angry because HOW DARE WOMEN LIKE THINGS.
My favourite quotes are the ones like this:
Worldwide sales figures of anything world wide tell you women don't buy shit unless it enhances their appearance, they absolutely need to (like a car), or it gives them a orgasm. Prove me wrong I dare you. Entertainment sales of anything is dominated and supported by men and if they had to rely on women would go bankrupt (...) Women buy makeup, whorey clothes, and plastic surgery, and thats pretty much it.
And this one, on a similar theme:
There isn't a market. Women care about their appearance way to much to publically present themselves as otaku and buy stacks of DVDs and display figures in their house, and put up posters and buy anime shirts and all the other shit that men do that keep the anime industry alive. The anime industry will die if more anime is made like this becuase they have to look good in front of their friends.
Women don't buy things, folks! That is why the entertainment industry is dominated by men. There could not be any other reason.
It is obvious these guys have never been in my bedroom. Admittedly I don't have posters up, but between the shelves and shelves of DVDs and the superhero action figures I think my decorating choices secure my geek cred pretty well. I also love the idea that I'd be concerned about my friends judging me for buying anime. (Rather, than, say, worrying about how we're all going to fit around one laptop screen so we can squee at the swimming bishonen.)
