In which I feel compelled to comment about That Spoiler, even though my main reaction at this point is eye-rolling.



So this is, like, the eighth or ninth time 616!Charles has died. And if I've lost track, you can tell it's an overused plot device. This article is an amusing summary, although it misses the Starjammers LS and includes a couple of things that I wouldn't have listed. (Charles didn't actually flatline during X-Cutioner's song, did he? Although I haven't read it, so I could be wrong there.)

Mind you, having Cyclops kill him is potentially interesting. I knew there was a reason that I haven't liked Scott's recent characterisation much!

Also, I am now restraining myself from writing a long, rambling comment to this article complaining about all the things they left out. However, I am inclined to forgive them for missing New Mutants #50/#51 and all the other stuff because they're so right about what they put in first place.

Just read it in the Guardian. I stopped reading the comics about two years ago, but Scott was written as ZOMGNowWithAddedDarkEdginess even then. And yes, it could be used for something interesting, but I am skeptical and somehow suspect it will be more presented in a "Charles had it coming" way, since Scott is the character they intend to keep around.

No, I think it's being used as a "OMG how have I become so DARK?" moment for Scott (currently holding the Phoenix Force), which is not terrifically interesting either. Charles has hardly been in the Giant Crossover Event at all.

I'm actually wondering if they're going to use this to push Scott back in a less dark and edgy direction, since Charles hasn't done much of anything during this crossover before showing up to be killed out of hand. (In fact, as far as I know his only previous significant appearance was showing up to tell the Avengers he didn't want to fight the X-Men on their behalf. Looks like he shows up to talk to the Phoenix Five about their recent decent into fascist megalomania and they, er, don't take it well.)

I am still far from certain this will go anywhere interesting, though.

Oh, Charles, I keep suspecting he's not so much "dying" as "nicking off to hang out with Lilandra" each time. He didn't actually flatline in X-Cutioner's Song as I recall, nor in Uncanny X-Men 200!

What is Lilandra even up to these days? I think Vulcan was ruling the Shi'ar last time I checked.

Dead, I'm afraid. Killed while trying to take over from Vulcan. Gladiator's reigning over the Shi'ar nowadays.

Yeah, that's what I thought. He gets shot by Stryfe with a techno-organic bullet, but not actually killed. (Even by Marvel Comics standards of 'killed'.)

Indeed. Mind you, I am surprised that Marvel is making such a big deal about it, with a press release and everything! I guess they're planning to have it stick for a while. (I give it, oh, five years. Tops.)
