Transformers Animated: Transwarped

Verdict: made from awesome! There were so many great things in the episode, I cannot possibly squee about them all.
First of all ... OH MY GOD, THEY KILLED BLURR! That was hardcore. First person to actually die in this series of Transformers. (I mean, maybe the Allspark can cure being crushed into a cube, but with the number of new characters they've introduced I would not lay money on seeing him again.
New Deceptions eeeeeeee! Bearing cosmic rust! What a great shout-out to G1 that was.
I hope Cyclonus gets to say something soon, because he looks wonderful. Want. Toy. Now. My favourite of the new 'Cons, though, has to be Strika. She is big and strong and in charge of a bunch of guys!
Many, many new Autobots to the point where I doubt I spotted them all. Perceptor sounds like STEPHEN HAWKING. This is genius in every sense of the word.
... and somewhere in between my squealing there was plot and stuff. The details of Sari's backstory did surprise me - I was assuming that Isaac had built her on purpose, rather than finding an adorable protoform. This explains a lot, especially why the Allspark has always been so keen on her. We still don't know how her protoform came into existence in the first place; it might be easier to guess if we knew where protoforms usually come from. Optimus implies that Cybertronians don't have parents, but beyond that we don't know. Speaking of which, loved the reference back to Sari explaining where babies come from to Optimus *g*.
My favourite part of the plot, though, was Ratchet's angst-ridden war flashbacks. Every time we learn more about the Autobot leaders they end up looking worse, and now we find out that they built a weapon of mass destruction with a 'simple' brain so he'd be easy to control. Ewwww.
I really want a flashback episode about how the war started now. Increasingly, I think that in this continuity Megatron was right about Decepticons being oppressed - given the way Autobot command behaves toward their own people this would hardly be surprising. Not that this justifies Megatron's actions, but it does explain how he got started.
Speaking of Megatron, I loved his interaction with Starscream throughout this episode. And, oh, Starscream. You are just not the lucky one *g*.
In conclusion: Prowl is win. So is this show.

Date: 2009-03-16 01:26 am (UTC)Noooo Blurr! I was surprised when he got crushed and _really_ surprised when we saw that he'd been completely cubed. Shockwave was pretty brazen to bring his corpse to a meeting to be disposed.
Cyclonus looks awesome! I hope he opens his mouth and has a proper Unicronian voice.
Yay! Preceptor! I so wasn't expecting the voice but it works. It probably means he won't say much because the Dynavox voice takes longer to say things 'cos it doesn't use contractions or run words together.
I was expecting an info dump about protoforms and sources of life on Cybertron but it was just kinda glossed over.
The Autobot leaders just keep getting worse as the series goes on! I always had an impression (probably from fandom) that the Autobot higher ups were pretty hard handed and that's why the Decepticons felt the need to go seize power. The TF:A high council just keep proving it.

Date: 2009-03-16 10:14 am (UTC)That really distressed me; jeez, Animated, with all these new characters did you have to go for someone I really liked? (Yeah, okay, by the standards of most Transformers series I should count myself lucky. But ouch.)

On the one hand I liked Ratchet's flashback sequence (though I wouldn't have played it as Ratchet actually zoning out), but on the other hand I flinch a little more every time the Autobots act badly, because it gets harder to care which side is winning. I know that "oppressed Decepticons have uprising" is not a new thing--nor for that matter is "Autobot High Command are jerks"--but in G1 we're generally seeing the wartorn remnants of Cybertronian society, prewar problems are kind of a moot point, and Autobot leadership has been handed over to a Card-Carrying Good Guy. (In Beast Wars the political situation is probably more complicated, but our heroes are kept isolated from it and whether the Maximal Council are bastards takes a backseat to keeping Megatron from taking over the universe.) Not that I think the Decepticons are good guys--they're really not--but it's a little depressing to think our heroes are just supporting the lesser of two evils. Maybe season three will see Autobot reform? Or maybe we could at least just fire Sentinel Prime? (Seriously, has he done a single thing right so far? Even by his own standards?)
Prowl is win.
It has been pointed out that his raid on Professor Sumdac's computer may not have been, you know, 100% necessary, but I can't actually make myself care. NINJA!
So yeah, possibly need to hand in my testosterone...
Date: 2009-03-16 02:06 pm (UTC)First of all ... OH MY GOD, THEY KILLED BLURR!
Heh. Yeah. Yeah they did. That was cool. I never liked him. And it was so casually Shakespearean. Longarm/Shockwave being surprised that the good guys are total 'tards was a bit kiddy for my tastes... but then, that means we get to see just how awesome Optimus & crew are. I really like the way that Prime is getting built-up to the status of his G1 namesake- we get to see him grow into the godly awesome dude he will become when
they bring in Peter Cullen to do the voiceMegatron inevitably offs Ultra Magnus. My favourite part of the plot, though, was Ratchet's angst-ridden war flashbacks. I loved that too- I felt that Ratchet was one of the least-developed characters so far and had been getting way too little screentime. Now, he gets to be a vehicle for some serious series-maturing. Nice to see the network realising where its real fanbase is :D
I'm a bit torn on Prowl, myself- the cyber-ninja technique was kinda stupid, while his instantly figuring out where Sari came from was quite the awesome. The jury remains out.
Starscream gets relegated to the role he should have had in G1 as soon as he tried to bump off Megatron in ep1: semi-irritating, utterly powerless comic relief (oh wait... lol). The real improvement is that it's represented properly in him being just a head. I had a major point-in-the-screen-in-open-mouthed-appreciation-of-the-writer's-awesome right at the end.
Now, for my own random fanboy-ing:
Loving Megatron several times over: "Ah, so you do remember my name. Pity I don't remember yours." WIN!
Very impressed by Bumblebee's upgrade and the explanation of why the stingers were so useless for the last two seasons.
Equally impressed by Sari's double-upgrade from useless medic to allspark-powered combat machine AND (more importantly) to teenager! I'm waiting for the (squick-reduced) Sari/Bumblebee fic now...
Speaking of squick- Omega Supreme's internal defences. I'll just leave that for you there.
I love the way Ratchet squeaks- I never noticed that before.
"Are you insa-hey, that's not a bad idea..."
And finally:
YELLOW GRIDS AND PURPLE LINE-ART MEGATRON! Awesomest. TF:M. Shout-out. Ever. I actually flailed there. Yeah. Flailed. Like Kermit the Frog.
