Cliches I Have Loved ...
Jan. 19th, 2009 06:43 pmSo, since
penknife posted her awesome fanfiction cliche poll, I have been looking at the list and contemplating the ones I've not written. I have only done eight! This does not seem like nearly enough. I need to write more cliche fic. Or just some fic, full stop, actually.
Genderswap: Yes, twice. Babylon 5 via alternate universes. One where Vir is a woman and becomes Londo Mollari's third wife, another where G'Kar is a woman and ends up in bed with the Shadows (literally.) Must write next instalment now I've figured out what happens to Londo in the universe where he's a she ...
Bodyswap: Yes, with Londo and G'Kar. (When I first encountered the fandom, there was no slash about them at ALL. While that was quickly corrected by
selenak and others, there are still many cliches they have yet to experience. I try to pick up the slack whenever possible.)
Drunk!fic: In Alias fandom, Arvin/Jack. One impromptu stag party, far too much vodka, slash ensues.
Huddling together for warmth! As I said to Penknife, while I have written cave!fic, it does not have this, as the characters are in a tropical valley at the time. In Antarctica. Being chased around by dinosaurs. Maybe I should have some characters hide in a cave somewhere colder?
Undercover in a gay bar! Have not written this. Hmmmmm, maybe due South? Which I bet has a fair bit of it already. Or Alias again?
Pretending to be married! Have not written this. In the show, total strangers and friends alike think Londo and G'Kar are married, but that cliche is further down the list.
Secretly a virgin! This cliche has always boggled me rather. Possibly because, as a non-secret virgin, I do not see the appeal. The chances of most of my favourite characters being secret virgins seem ... um, remote. A substantial proportion of them have produced children or had sex on screen. (And as for those that have done neither ... I don't think G'Kar was playing Scrabble with those ladies, do you?) I did write a story where Scorpius remarks that he's never had penetrative sex due to non-standard hybrid anatomy, but that only makes him a virgin by certain very stupid technical definitions.
Amnesia: While not a classic amnesia fic, I think I count Coalescence here.
Cross-dressing: Not exactly. I did write a story about G'Kar dressing in Centauri clothes, though, which sort of counts.
Forced to share a bed!: I'm incredulous to find that I haven't written this one. Maybe I should try to think of a fandom.
Aliens make them do it!: Alas, no. Selena said once that there should be fic where humans make Londo and G'Kar have sex.
Wingfic: Of all the things on this list? This is the one I do not understand at all. I mean, how did this become a cliche? Anyway, I have not written any stories where characters spontaneously grow wings.
Mpreg: It's canon in B5 that male Narns carry offspring in their pouches, and yet I have never written about this. (I don't think anyone else has, either.) I blame G'Kar for being a xenophiliac pervert, personally.
Mistakenly assumed to be gay!: Once again, this happens in B5 canon to Londo and G'Kar. More than once.
Let's play truth or dare!: Selena beat me to it *g*. Not that I don't have other fandoms. Somehow I can't see Magneto and Xavier going in for a round of this old favourite, although some versions of the Doctor might ...
Mary Sue fic: Some people expressed surprise that so few people were owning up to this one, but given that the poll said 'have written' not 'have thought about' I stand by my negative answer. By the time I started writing down my fanfiction, I had stopped writing down my Mary Sues. (Thank goodness.)
Aphrodisiacs!: No, strangely enough. I have a few ideas for this one, but I seem to always get hung up on the fuzzy consent issues this plot device creates.
Curtainfic: Oh boy, yes. In X-Men, Babylon 5 and due South. I am told I write good fluff when the mood strikes me.
Hurt/Comfort: It's the cliche I live for. Sometimes I allow canon to provide the hurt and jump straight to the comfort, though.
Apocalypse fic: A bit here and there, yes.
Someone has a baby! Technically the person who has just given birth doesn't appear 'on screen', but Vir is the father and he does, so yes.
Telepathic soulbonding: Seems a bit redundant in X-Men, and it's the wrong cliche for my favourite relationship in B5 where the characters have a terrible experience with telepathy.
Werewolves mate for life! I've never written a story with werewolves, and fail to see why they would mate for life when real wolves do not.

The "humans make them do it!" thing still needs to be written.
Trivia for you: one of the Lost actors has suggested canonical babyfic in that he said there should be a spin-off about Locke and Ben raising one together.

Date: 2009-01-20 02:09 am (UTC)Some of those I've never heard of, but others I have encountered far too many examples of. I'm surprised babyfic isn't there, as in the characters being reduced to babies or toddlers. I think I shall add it in my version of this.

Date: 2009-01-20 11:25 am (UTC)I always let canon right me hurt for me. The comics fandoms seem to live for fix-it fic. To the point where I say read this so I can rec you the fix-it.
