... er, about twelve years late. But if we'd had livejournal back when due South was being broadcast, I'm sure it would have been covered in the squees and screams of a thousand fangirls. In brief:
Ray: You got an axe for me?
Fraser: Yeah, I have two axes.
Me: *is puddle of goo*
Dear Fraser,
Seldom have a wanted to hug a character and smack him in the head as much as I want to hug and smack you while you were running after that train. (Well, except Londo Mollari, but this is why I will always think of this contradictory feeling as The Londo Effect.)
You love Victoria. I can understand that, given the circumstances under which you met and what a beautiful couple the two of you would make were she not PURE EVIL. I can even see why you're willing to overlook what she did to you, since you think you deserve it for sending her to prison. I can just about buy that you believed her explanation for killing a man. However. There are a couple of other reasons why this was a bad thing to do.
First of all, she shot Diefenbaker. Let me repeat that: she shot Diefenbaker.
Second of all, look at what she did to Ray. More to the point, look at what she got you to do to Ray. It's not enough that because of her he was investigated by Internal Affairs, something I'm sure his career didn't need. Victoria managed to get between you and the best thing that's happened to you since you walked into Chicago.
Ray Vecchio loves you. Now maybe he thinks of you as an extra brother, and maybe he wants to jump your bones. That's so far from my point that it's across the Canadian border. The point is that he welcomed a lonely exile into his city, his home and his heart. While far from perfect, Ray is the kind of guy who's always willing to play taxi service, lend you money or get shot at with you. He played ice hockey with you, even though he's hilariously bad at it. He blew up the Riv, because you asked. He even offered to kill Diefenbaker so you wouldn't have to.
(The lesson here is: people who shoot your wolf are not your friends. People who offer to shoot your wolf are the best friends you could have.)
When the proverbial hit the fan, Ray not only refused to cut a deal to get out of trouble, he mortgaged his house to post your bail. His family home, that is full of Vecchios. Because he trusted you not to run off. If you feel compelled to screw up your own life because of a woman, that's your business, but it's not OK to screw up everyone else's as well. If you'd got on that train, there's a good chance your best friend would have lost his job and his house. Worse, you'd have broken his heart. Look at how upset and betrayed he was when you missed his party and multiply that by, like, a million.
And he's such a good friend, all he says when you tell him you were going with her is 'I know.'
... and yet, I do get why you did it. And I forgive you. Obviously love (at least love of Victoria) makes you crazy and selfish, but it's also its own punishment. So, on balance, I guess I want to hug you more than I want to smack you. Just don't let it happen again.
Love,
Andraste.
Dear Victoria,
I love you as I love Morden and Emperor Cartagia. Don't ever change, you magnificent bitch.
Love and hate,
Andraste.
Dear Ray,
You are a prince among men, and the best friend a Mountie could have. I can see why you feel guilty for shooting Benny, but really, he should be saying 'thank you, Ray, for almost killing me and thus stopping me from irrevocably fucking up my entire life.'
(Also, if you're not gay for Fraser, you may want to think about the message you're sending by offering to help him build a Canadian shack. That kind of thing might easily be misinterpreted. Hey, I'm just sayin'.)
I'm going to try not to let my deep love for you prevent me from giving this Kowalski guy a fair chance when he eventually turns up. He's going to have some awfully big shoes to fill, though.
All the hugs you deserve,
Andraste.

Date: 2007-04-19 03:28 am (UTC)Everyone should watch due South all the time! Er, except that we need to work and sleep and eat and stuff.
Also, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend sisabet's episodic vid Icebound Stream.
Ooo, thank you for the rec. I shall download that now.

Date: 2007-04-18 12:21 pm (UTC)It took me a while to like RayK and considering the large amount of love you're showing for Vecchio, I suspect the same thing will happen to you. Just keep remembering, it's not RayV who wants to jump Fraser's bones, it's RayK.

Date: 2007-04-19 03:29 am (UTC)I would not be at all surprised if this turned out to be the case. I now understand why there were Ray Wars way back when.

Date: 2007-04-18 12:47 pm (UTC)Welcome to the fandom, I'm sure you'll have a lovely time. I would just like to add that David Marciano's (Ray Vecchio) eyes are MUCH greener than the TV could ever shoe. He's also one of the sweetest guys I've ever met. :)

Date: 2007-04-19 03:32 am (UTC)I was just watching North last night, and I don't know if it was the surrounding scenery or my laptop screen, but wow, they are really green, aren't they?

Date: 2007-04-20 09:11 am (UTC)Wardrobe definitely dress him better as time goes by. Maybe they decided that the red Mountie outfit was bright enough without Ray clashing with it.

Date: 2007-04-18 01:29 pm (UTC)....I, like Fraser, fell in love with Victoria. Not either Ray, nor Fraser - Victoria, bless her manipulative screwed up self.

Date: 2007-04-19 03:36 am (UTC)Why am I not surprised? She's a great character, and seems right up your alley *g*.
Victoria's Secret is not where I would start someone with Fraser or RayV. Fraser is deliberately out of character from the moment he glimpses Victoria at the station onwards, and part of the wonderfulness of Ray in these episodes comes from knowing just how much crap he's put up with for Fraser in the past season.

Date: 2007-04-18 04:52 pm (UTC)As for Kowalski... I love and adore him. He and Vecchio are very different, which I think was a good call on the writers' part. But loving Kowalski doesn't make me love Vecchio any less, or appreciate his overwhelming awesomeness any less. :)
Anyway. Fraser! Has two axes! And you have Season 2 ahead of you, which I love beyond reason. Enjoy! :D

VS is so painful and so beautiful, and RAY is SO AMAZING, I'm flailing just thinking about it. And it's a thrill to see someone else enjoying the show so much, and speaking so cleverly and eloquently about it.
Thank you! Victoria's Secret was just an extraordinary episode, beautifully written, shot and acted by all concerned.
As for Kowalski... I love and adore him. He and Vecchio are very different, which I think was a good call on the writers' part.
Given that they were already replacing one guy called Ray with another guy called Ray, it was probably a good idea to make sure they had different personalities *g*.
But loving Kowalski doesn't make me love Vecchio any less, or appreciate his overwhelming awesomeness any less. :)
Obviously there are many people who swing both Rays - I shall have to see if I am one of them when I get up to Season Three.
Anyway. Fraser! Has two axes! And you have Season 2 ahead of you, which I love beyond reason. Enjoy! :D
Alas, I have now run out of new episodes :(. I live in Australia, where only Season One has so far been released on DVD. Although I did manage to get hold of North and Vault. I should go post about how awesome they were.

Date: 2007-04-19 04:10 am (UTC)Absolutely. I still think it's the best episode of the series. Not that there aren't lots of other great ones, just that VS is some of the best TV I've ever seen. (My reaction post is here (http://brynnmck.livejournal.com/80583.html#cutid1); no pressure whatsoever to look, but I know that one of my frustrations in being so far behind the times was trying to find discussion. :)
I shall have to see if I am one of them when I get up to Season Three.
Yeah. I shed many, many tears over Vecchio's departure, let me tell you. And this won't mean much to you now--if ever--but I was not thrilled with S3; overall, I like S4 much better. Which I only mention because I took a fairly long (for me) break after S3, and then as soon as I started S4 I was like, "My show! My show is back!" and I was all relieved. YMMV, obviously. :)
I looooooooove North and Vault. Two of my favorites. And if you're interested in getting hold of the other episodes, I might be able to help--email me at brynnmck [at] gmail, if you want.
Aaaaaaanyway. *de-glomps* Thanks for the lovely thoughts!

Date: 2007-04-19 03:43 am (UTC)It's always fun when a newbie stumbles across one of your favourite shows *g*. Hopefully I will have enough downtime at work today to post some more reactions. (Working in an inbound call centre, if the phone is not ringing I have nothing better to do than squee about Mounties and cops.)
