andraste... er, about twelve years late. But if we'd had livejournal back when due South was being broadcast, I'm sure it would have been covered in the squees and screams of a thousand fangirls. In brief:

Seldom have a wanted to hug a character and smack him in the head as much as I want to hug and smack you while you were running after that train. (Well, except Londo Mollari, but this is why I will always think of this contradictory feeling as The Londo Effect.)
You love Victoria. I can understand that, given the circumstances under which you met and what a beautiful couple the two of you would make were she not PURE EVIL. I can even see why you're willing to overlook what she did to you, since you think you deserve it for sending her to prison. I can just about buy that you believed her explanation for killing a man. However. There are a couple of other reasons why this was a bad thing to do.
First of all, she shot Diefenbaker. Let me repeat that: she shot Diefenbaker.
Second of all, look at what she did to Ray. More to the point, look at what she got you to do to Ray. It's not enough that because of her he was investigated by Internal Affairs, something I'm sure his career didn't need. Victoria managed to get between you and the best thing that's happened to you since you walked into Chicago.
Ray Vecchio loves you. Now maybe he thinks of you as an extra brother, and maybe he wants to jump your bones. That's so far from my point that it's across the Canadian border. The point is that he welcomed a lonely exile into his city, his home and his heart. While far from perfect, Ray is the kind of guy who's always willing to play taxi service, lend you money or get shot at with you. He played ice hockey with you, even though he's hilariously bad at it. He blew up the Riv, because you asked. He even offered to kill Diefenbaker so you wouldn't have to.
(The lesson here is: people who shoot your wolf are not your friends. People who offer to shoot your wolf are the best friends you could have.)
When the proverbial hit the fan, Ray not only refused to cut a deal to get out of trouble, he mortgaged his house to post your bail. His family home, that is full of Vecchios. Because he trusted you not to run off. If you feel compelled to screw up your own life because of a woman, that's your business, but it's not OK to screw up everyone else's as well. If you'd got on that train, there's a good chance your best friend would have lost his job and his house. Worse, you'd have broken his heart. Look at how upset and betrayed he was when you missed his party and multiply that by, like, a million.
And he's such a good friend, all he says when you tell him you were going with her is 'I know.'
... and yet, I do get why you did it. And I forgive you. Obviously love (at least love of Victoria) makes you crazy and selfish, but it's also its own punishment. So, on balance, I guess I want to hug you more than I want to smack you. Just don't let it happen again.

You are a prince among men, and the best friend a Mountie could have. I can see why you feel guilty for shooting Benny, but really, he should be saying 'thank you, Ray, for almost killing me and thus stopping me from irrevocably fucking up my entire life.'
(Also, if you're not gay for Fraser, you may want to think about the message you're sending by offering to help him build a Canadian shack. That kind of thing might easily be misinterpreted. Hey, I'm just sayin'.)
I'm going to try not to let my deep love for you prevent me from giving this Kowalski guy a fair chance when he eventually turns up. He's going to have some awfully big shoes to fill, though.
