As in many RPG games, Dragon Age has equipment on NPCs that's better than anything the PC is likely to find just lying around in a chest. Sometimes they restrict this equipment so it's not possible to make a male mage and have him run around in Morrigan's robes. (Unfortunately.) And sometimes they don't, so it can be worth picking up characters you don't plan to use just so you can steal their gear and leave them standing around naked. I imagine the scene that played out in camp must have gone something like this ...
Alistair: Why is the assassin standing next to the fire wearing nothing but a thong?
PC: I stole his armour. It's three times better than that gladiator outfit I've been walking around in since we met. Besides, it prevents him sneaking up on us with a concealed weapon.
Zevran: You'd be surprised where I can conceal a weapon.
PC: I sincerely doubt that you're keeping a blade under that outfit, unless you want to lose parts of your anatomy you seem to value highly.
Alistair: Isn't it bad enough that Morrigan walks around in next to nothing all the time? Do we have to let him join in?
PC: If it makes you feel better, I wouldn't mind if you want to take off your armor.
Alistair: Er ...
Zevran: We should all get naked!
Wynne: Why is the assassin standing next to the fire in nothing but a thong?
Zevran: I'm being decorative. Care to join us?
Wynne: Oh, for Maker's sake. Kindly make him put on some pants.
PC: *sigh*
