So, as the entire internet probably knows: the new generation of Pokémon games won't contain every Pokémon. (Unlike every previous generation of main series games - even the split between Gen II and Gen III eventually let you catch every species you had before.) And, yeah, as one of the people who has been moving some individual 'mons from game to game for an entire decade, I am currently pretty upset.
No sooner does GameFreak reveal Pokémon Home and feed my desire to put everyone in one place that they tell me, no, not that place! You have to stick them in Home instead of actually playing with them! At the moment, I don't know what's annoying me more: GameFreak pretending the whole thing isn't happening or the fellow players complaining that people are disappointed because we're somehow playing the game wrong.
For me, the fun of Pokémon is primarily two things: a) catching 'em all and b) collecting an ever-growing squad of my faves who have been carefully caught, bred and trained to be the best they can be. I'm not really worried about the former - I didn't mind not having a National dex to fill in Generation VII. As long as I have somewhere to keep my complete living dex up to date that part is fine with me. However, my squad currently has 118 Pokémon in it, and I'm not even done yet. (Two more shiny hunts currently ongoing, hence the strange number.) There is no way in hell I'm going to be able to be able to bring them all over to Galar - given how many of them are starters from previous generations or Legendaries I'll be lucky to get two thirds transferred over.
I don't pretend to know all the realities behind this choice, but I do know that I think this reflects a set of priorities that are very different from my own. I don't care about prettier graphics or competitive balance! Just let me play with my Buzzwole!
Now, I understand that people who transport their Pokemon from one game to another like me are a tiny minority. But I would also be willing to bet that our tiny minority are far more likely to buy multiple games and giant piles of merchandise than everyone else, and we do it year in and year out instead of playing for a few years and then moving on. More than that, we are definitely the people most likely to complain endlessly on Twitter if we don't like something. Which can't be fun for whichever poor social media managers have to read all that stuff at the moment.
GameFreak could still turn this all around for me, either by announcing that they'll be adding the missing Pokémon back via patching or in a future game or by revealing that Home is going to be more than Bank but on the switch. If it's possible to interact with Pokémon there - maybe even to battle, breed and train them - then I won't mind not having them in the game so much.
If, however, all I can do with most of my Generation VIII squad when Generation IX comes along is shove them in a box ... well, that makes me wonder what the point of catching and breeding and training them even is. Might as well take the first Wooloo I find and just throw it in a box if that's where it's going to end up in the long run. Which in turn makes me a lot less eager to get a copy of the game on day one, instead of waiting a month or two and getting it used.
