(Well, maybe it's tied with writing. I have found creating fanmixes to be painless by comparison.)

Dear Self,

Next time you grab clips for a vid, remember to be more diligent about disabling the audio stream. Premiere Elements has decided that it's allergic to whatever codec VirtualDubMod encodes with and will not import them if they have sound attached. (Stripping the stream also reduces file size and saves you deleting the stray audio later, but those are relatively minor problems comparatively speaking.)

Love,

The version of you that just spent more than an hour fixing half the damn clips in this vid.

On the bright side: I am within sight of actually remastering Be My Hero, which is to say that the jigsaw pieces have all been cut out and just need to be put together in the correct order. Also, I have not looked at this vid in years and I was not as horrified as I had feared I would be by my first vidding effort! (I hope the same thing happens when I some day open Ev'rything I've Got but I fear that is a fainter hope.)

In all seriousness, I feel like it took me eight years and fifteen vids to learn how to do it properly and be consistently happy with the end product. I certainly made some vids I like before that, but it seems to have happened mostly by accident. I mean, I think that Brothers In Arms and the two Torchwood vids are genuinely good, but I could not tell you exactly how that happened. Whereas I actually know what I did to make Mackerel Skies and Let Yourself Go turn out well.

I guess this makes sense - it's not like the first fifteen stories I wrote back when I was four or five years old were very good. Clearly the 'million words of crap' rule applies to vidding as well, but in my case it only took about an hour's worth of completed vids before I felt like I had the basics down. (This is the second time I've remade Be My Hero, though, so maybe it's a bit more than an hour.)
