So, northern summer means a break in TV for those of us in the Magic Land of Downloadia, too, even though it's freezing outside and watching television from under a blanket is one of the only sensible activities. (I didn't make the bed today because I had to keep climbing back into it.)

I've already used the time to catch up on Season Three of Orphan Black - say what you will about the plausibility of some of the twists, but I never get to the end of an episode without being desperate to know what happens next. Thirty episodes in, I still regularly forget that Tatiana Maslany is not five people, and I love the characters.

Now, there's plenty of TV for me to watch or rewatch during the break - especially now I have Netflix! - but I was thinking I should use at least some of the time to catch up on all of something relatively short. Hence this highly scientific poll, in case someone has an informed opinion:

Poll #16819 TV Poll

What should I watch first?

6 (50.0%)

Penny Dreadful
3 (25.0%)

Black Sails
2 (16.7%)

Something else that I will tell you about in the comments.
1 (8.3%)

I know very little about any of these options. I've just heard the distant buzzing sound creating by happy fans, and avoided spoilers as a result. (My knowledge can be summed up with 'zombies and David Anders, sort of like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen only Billie Piper is involved somehow and, um ... there are presumably pirates in it?')

Help and advice in the form of poll responses appreciated!

I love both Penny Dreadful and Black Sails, but the former already has people I care about invested in it, so I voted Black Sails first for you. Which is in dire need of your fannish reaction. :) I wrote an entire pimp post about why I love the show and people should watch it, though that one is a bit spoilery about a couple of the character relationship. Unspoilery short version: it's a Treasure Island Prequel/RPF crossover, featuring pirates fictional and historical alike, great female characters, canon bi (and just the women). Someone described as Deadwood on Water, which isn't wrong if you know Deadwood. Also Toby Stephens, who plays the lead, is a worthy son of Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens.

Have you seen/considered Hannibal? It's one of the most beautifully shot shows I've ever seen, both visually and plot-wise, and the cast is fantastic all around.

Then I most definitely withdraw my suggestion. Hannibal isn't Saw (I love the former, wouldn't even begin the latter), but more than once I mumbled sarcastically at the TV when the "Viewer discretion advised" message appeared after the show had already shown some artistically gruesome nightmare or another.

I've never seen Black Sails and am behind on Penny Dreadful, but Izombie is a wonderfully fun ride. It reminds me a bit of Middleman, though less ridiculous.

iZombie is fantastic, funny, and very genre aware. Penny Dreadful also knows its genre, but it has a lot of jump-scare moments and a fair bit of body horror (which, surprisingly for a show about eating brains, iZombie skipped out on.) I'm still watching Penny Dreadful, because ugh, ugh, Eva Green is so beautiful.

Also putting in a vote for Hannibal - so beautiful and weird and weirdly funny.

If you don't like the feeding people to other people thing, then DEFINITELY don't watch Hannibal. He likes to give dinner parties and make thinly veiled 'people-food' jokes ...basically every episode.
