Apparently it takes him most of the time until 2023 to realise that this kind of thing is a BAD IDEA. I liked how he makes what seems to be a unilateral decision in the future, too - leaving the gang inside and going to blow up the plane - but it's both a good decision and a self-sacrificing one.

I think Erik probably got out of the Pentagon in the regular timeline the exact same way he gets out of the plastic prison in X2: Mystique being awesome. Or maybe Pietro figured out Erik was his dad and sprung him in that timeline too.
