So far, this is my favourite thing in X-Men: First Class:
Another clip, which I can't embed here because embeds aren't working at the moment.
OMG! Baby Charles and Baby Mystique! SO ADORABLE!
I love the idea of them meeting as adolescents more than I can say, and I'm itching to see what they do with this concept in the film. (And to come home and write about their wacky teenage mutant adventures.) It certainly puts a different spin on Mystique's behaviour in the first three films, always assuming we're in the same timeline. I'm keen to find out how we got from here to her poisoning Cerebro and going along with Erik's 'let's use Charles to kill all the humans on Earth!' plan.
One thing the trailers are doing a great job of getting across is that movie Charles thinks mutant powers are really, really cool. In the comicverse he had the misfortune to encounter the Shadow King before any other fellow mutants, which made him a bit warier going forward. Here he gets to meet Mystique instead - and while there are plenty of potentially nefarious uses for her powers (including stealing food from the Xavier family fridge, apparently) who could be frightened of that little blue girl? He's so happy to see her and know he's not the only one who can do neat things! I love how enthused he's been in all the footage we've seen - about meeting Raven and Hank, and about training Havok and Banshee.
Other interesting data: Charles has an English accent but is carrying a baseball bat. (Which, LOL. Honey, you would be much better off using your psychic powers to scare off potential burglars than threatening them with that.) My guess is that the scene takes place in America, since Raven seems to have snuck into the kitchen, but the Xavier family haven't been there very long.
I am bemused by the number of comments on the YouTube page declaring that this movie is going to suck based on this clip. How can people not like the cute baby mutants?!

I want Mystique fic coming out of this film now more than anything else!

For a lot of them, he must be the first person they've ever met who isn't frightened of what they can do (or among the first, once he starts bringing Mystique and/or Magneto to recruitments.) No wonder a lot of the people he recruits would follow him anywhere.

I have high hopes for many great Mystique stories, with Charles and with others. There's obviously going to be a lot of potential material.

Date: 2011-05-26 08:54 am (UTC)I don't know if it's true, but I think I once read somewhere that a fair number of baseball bats are sold in the UK, not for playing baseball, but specifically for home defense and/or thuggery. :)

It sounds like it may be enjoyable even for people not already obsessed with the subject matter like I am *g*. Plus: baby mutants! So cute!

I have also heard this - there are actually laws about who can own them and why here in Australia. We don't play much baseball, and the police don't want people using them as weapons. I don't know if people in the UK bought weaponised baseball bats back in the forties, though.
