... is not what I thought it would be. I will make a proper post about The End of Time at some point, but I watched it this morning and have been browsing the internet to see what people thought. On the whole I liked the finale, although I can certainly see why some fans didn't. Only one thing I read on Gallifrey Base has made me want to throw rocks, though.
Martha - in my opinion, a huge bitch. First of all, she's engaged to Tom Milligan, the man who sacrificed himself for her benefit in an alternate reality. But no, along comes Mickey, who she randomly decides to marry instead. I think I can fathom a certain reason why she'd do that, but it's not exactly politically correct, and it's for Inferno.
I really don't know where to begin dissecting all the things wrong with that statement. Given that the Inferno is the adult forum on Gallifrey Base, what the poster seems to be implying is that Martha dumped her fiancé for Mickey because black men have bigger cocks than white men. What a charming combination of racism, sexism and phallocentrism we have there!
Also, I feel compelled to point out that we have no idea how far in the future that scene occurs, or what went wrong between Martha and Tom. Anything at all could have happened! He could have decided to stay in Africa, or met someone else, or turned out to be an unfriendly alien! And even if she did dump him for Mickey, that still doesn't make her a bitch. It is the year 2010 and women are entitled to break off relationships without people calling them nasty names. Martha isn't obligated to marry the Tom of this timeline just because he sacrificed himself for her in one that never happened.
As for the Mickey/Martha scene - on the whole, I approve. I can see how without more context it can come across as RTD pairing off the two people of colour because they were left over, but I think the relationship is full of all kinds of interesting possibilities. They're both fabulous characters and I love the idea of them defending the Earth together as 'freelancers'.
I think the best way to overcome that issue with the scene as written is for there to be lots and lots of Mickey and Martha together to fill in the blanks - in fandom and in spin-off canon. Has anyone called Big Finish and suggested that they try to talk the BBC letting them do a Smith & Jones spin-off? It seems like it would be right up their ally. Noel Clarke has worked for them before and I thought Freema was good in that Torchwood audio ...

Date: 2010-01-04 04:49 pm (UTC)Big yes to the idea being freelancers defending the earth together from me as well! Interestingly, I thought that a spin-off with both of them after the end of season four would be awesome. (Weren't they holding hands when they walked away from the TARDIS?) Married...it fits, but I suspect you're right that it is probably some years in the future that it was actually happening (would the Sontarans honestly be trying something on earth *just* after Gallifrey almost appeared next to it?)
Anyway, that's a long response basically saying 'yes this.'
