Now that my health issues are somewhat resolved, back to fannish things!

As I've mentioned before, I've really been enjoying Mike Carey's run on X-Men: Legacy, to the point where if I ever meet the man I may do something embarrassing like propose marriage. The eighteen issues of Xavier-centric goodness have just wrapped up in a story I've not yet had the chance to read. Carey will continue writing the book with different cast members, while Charles is next slated to turn up in 'Dark X-Men.' And here I spoiler cut for info from solicitations and interviews.

So after a year and a half of Carey exploring the darker corners of Xavier's character in a complex and satisfying way ... Charles is going off to join Norman Osborn's Dark X-Men. Argh!

Charles has a long history of putting trust in villains: Magneto, Sabretooth, Juggernaut, even Mystique to a degree. Provided someone is willing to work with Xavier, he's more than happy to put their past aside and give them a chance. Sometimes it's even worked out well. Wolverine, Rogue and Emma Frost have all become important members of the x-family. However, they have always been people who were under HIS aegis at the time - Xavier is very bad at not being in charge of things. (The Illuminati were a whole group of men who are bad at not being in charge of things, so I guess they all balanced each other out.)

The writer Matt Fraction says that Osborn is promoting peaceful tolerance between humans and mutants, which is indeed of interest to Charles. However, he goes on to say:

"Osborn is very seductive. He's saying, 'these people [the Dark X-Men], this is the face of law and order.' 'Dark' X-Men, that's our label as readers, he's not calling them that. There's a whole lot of subterfuge going on. We know there's a time bomb under the kitchen table, but the people eating at the table don't."

Except, you know, some of the people have TELEPATHIC POWERS and should know better anyway.

Charles Xavier is not a man who takes orders well - just ask Corsair about the time he spent in the Starjammers. (Er, you'll have to wait for him to come back from the dead first.) It strains my credulity that he would decide to follow the lead of a mentally unbalanced former supervillain. And this is assuming Osborn has some kind of telepathy-blocking tech that stops Charles seeing that he's actually a mentally unbalanced CURRENT supervillain who's in a cabal with Doctor Doom and Loki. I doubt I will be satisfied by this story unless it turns out that Xavier is wise to Osborn already and just waiting around for an opportune moment to stab him in the back. (Or he could be a Skrull.) Charles doing morally dubious things for his own reasons I can embrace and enjoy. Charles following the morally dubious agenda of someone else? Um, no.

I already had the feeling that X-Men: Legacy might have spoiled me entirely for future Xavier canon, and these solicitations are not putting my mind at ease.
