Hooray, my show is back! I had not realised just how much I'd missed all these special people until I had them back. Rambly, rambly thoughts below.

I had also somehow managed to forget just exactly how adorable Hiro Nakamura is. I've been looking forward to his trip to the past ever since I saw the end of last season, and I was not disappointed.

Those who'd heard casting spoilers knew that he was going to be, er, surprised by the reality of his hero Kensei. I was slightly dismayed when I heard that David Anders was going to be on Heroes. This has nothing to do with the actor himself, who is a perfectly decent performer. No, it was the inevitable influx of Sark fangirls I feared. I have to admit that his performance as 'Kensei' has won me over, though, by being so funny. I thought he and Masi bounced of each other really well.

I'd raised an eyebrow at the producers' decision to reveal the great Japanese hero Kensei as a white bloke, but having seen him in action, my concerns have been somewhat allayed. Especially since I suspect that Hiro may end up being the heroic Kensei that history records - he knows the script, and it would be plausible for him to decide that the 'real' Kensei isn't up to the job. Also, Yaeko is meant to be Kensei's princess, and we all saw the look Hiro gave her when she took that sword and marched off to save her father. I like Yaeko already - Hiro has the best love interests.

Speaking of which, back in the present Ando has been waiting patiently for him with Nakamura Kaito. The change in their relationship in those four months has been considerable, with Ando acting as friend, sidekick and devil's advocate for Kaito much as he did for Hiro before. Kaito's conversation with Angela Petrelli was intriguing, and I'll be distraught if he's actually dead. (Which I have my doubts about - sure it looks like his brains are all over the concrete, but we still don't know what his powers are ...)

Angela and Nathan, meanwhile, are blaming each other for Peter's disappearance. I'm glad that there's an in-story explanation for The Beard, and look forward to future episodes when Nathan will presumably get over his drunken emo enough to shave the horrible thing off. Of course, it might take a while for Peter to get back to his family if he doesn't remember who he is! And if I found a half-naked Peter Petrelli handcuffed inside a box, I would not be whining that he wasn't a crate of ipods. I'm just sayin'.

In Los Angeles, Claire is trying to move on with her life. Her loving father tells her to blend in, but it's obvious that a girl like her could never fade into the background. And I liked that it wasn't her powers that made her stand out at school on her first day - it was her intelligence and her willingness to stand up for the underdog. Go Claire! And as for Noah, he can't even take his own advice. I think my favourite part of the whole awesome episode was when he snapped and put his manager in his place once and for all. Or maybe it was 'I made a calendar.' Heh. Oh, HRG, never change.

I was squeeing with joy during the mobile call, too. Because HRG + Mohinder + Matt = OT3 of company destorying awesome. I'm sure Matt will manage to squeeze it in somewhere between being a detective and looking after Molly. "I miss Mohinder. He cooked." Awwwwwwww.

I'm wondering if Matt's divorce is the writers' way of removing a character who really didn't work for the show last season, although I would like more information about that, because last we checked his wife was pregnant. I can see why he'd leave his wife, but running off to New York and leaving his unborn child behind seems out of character to me. Maybe he found out the baby wasn't his? I'll wait for more information.

Speaking of elements of the show that didn't work so well last season, no sign of Niki here. Maybe it was just the number of plot lines struggling for attention in the first episode, but I don't think it's an accident that she was given lower priority than the other regulars. Personally, I don't want them dropping her story - I liked the way her arc ended in How To Stop An Exploding Man even though I thought it dragged horribly in the middle.

Instead of Niki, we get to meet new girl Maya. I haven't really formed an opinion on her as a character yet, but her story and powers seem interesting so far. Having the ability to accidentally kill trucks full of people sucks if you're not the kind of person who wants to kill lots of people. Also, yay for more women of colour in the show!

Is it can it be Heroes time now?
