VividCon Non-Con Report: Premieres Show
Aug. 26th, 2007 12:15 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So, due to that pesky ocean in the way and a lack of funds, I have been unable to attend VividCon. (Although I do have a plan to do so next year, if I can save up enough on my theoretically soon to increase salary.) However, due to the wonders of DVD, I have been able to watch the Premieres show anyway!
lokisrose and I sat down and saw the whole thing together yesterday. These are my honest first reactions, without going back to review anything, so don't expect any depth in the commentary. Before I begin, I'd like to say that the bar is set incredibly high this year. A lot of this is just mindless squeeing. I have no idea how I'm going to live up to these vids in 2008!
We skipped the BSG vids because I'm avoiding spoilers, and Dreams Are Not My Home because
lokisrose hasn't seen the end of Torchwood Season One yet.
Moons of Jupiter by Eunice
A Doctor Who vid about the Tenth Doctor. To which I have to say: awwwwww, Ten! This was a great way to open the show, especially if you're a fan of the character like I am. He is just so adorkable.
It's Not Over by butterfly
As someone who stopped watching Supernatural after the first season due to failing to become attached to any of the characters, this had a limited impact on me. It was very pretty and well-made, I just don't have the love for Dean and Sam that fandom at large has.
Seven Nation Army by Gabby
I don't do horror movies, but I at least knew the plot of It well enough to explain the outline to
lokisrose while we watched this. Powerful vid with a great song choice, and we had fun playing 'spot the actor'.
My Happy Ending by Abby
Oooo, I like this. One of the best things about vidding is the way we can turn the POV around and look at the source from other perspectives. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is different from this angle.
(Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay by FairestCat and lovelokest
Nicely made, but as someone who's only seen the pilot episode of Stargate: Atlantis I think I was missing a lot. Good to see a vid about Elizabeth, though, who doesn't seem to get as much attention from vidders as some of the other cast members.
Rodeohead by AbsoluteDestiny
*dies laughing*
Hilarious concept - Firefly meets Radiohead! - and technically spectacular into the bargain. Great, great vid.
Men in Black by Apocalypse West (Dianne)
And keeping up with the hilarious concepts, this song is a natural match for Torchwood. Funny and clever, and didn't spoil the ending too badly for Loki. (I figured I should show it to her, because how much is a commedy vid really going to spoil the plot? And I was right.)
I Remember by L'Abattoir
Fantastic vid with superb use of colour. I went out and *ahemed* the pilot of Charlie Jade just so I can find out what the hell was going on here!
Cathain by Jill
I admit we kind of talked through this Flyboys vid - mostly because I would say 'oh, a lion!' whenever the lion appeared, and 'hey, is that Anakin Skywalker? - but I could still tell it was very shiny. Excellent use of movement.
Head Over Feet by Killalla
A Lord Peter Wimsey vid, and the only thing in the whole show that really didn't work for me. A lot of long head shots and a song choice I thought didn't feel right for the source.
Bankshot by Zeneyepirate
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
I love this show, I love these characters, I love this vid. Captures the feel of Hustle perfectly. As Loki said 'together, they commit crime!' I wish I had Season Three to watch now. *sob*
Want by Destina
Ah, now here's a Supernatural vid I did get. From the perspective of the Yellow-Eyed Demon, and appropriately creepy.
Spiriti by Deejay
I loved the use of speeded-up footage in this Miracles vid. It's really hard to pull that effect off in something other than a commedy vid, but it worked well here to make the whole thing seem dislocated and strange.
Sick Cycle Carousel by Wolfling
Star Wars vid that did a great job of mixing both trilogies. Shiny Jedi and the non-shiny patterns they get themselves into. Could have used more Yoda, but I think I am slightly biased there.
West Of Her Spine by sweetestdrain
Loki: ... I should never watch this show.
Me: *moves Dexter further up her to-watch list.*
Very clever, and absolutely brilliant song choice for the source.
Synthesiser by Zoe
Hee. Buffy is techno! Good fun.
... and at this point we took a short intermission and closed the blinds so we could see better.
Lifetime Piling Up by Sperenza
We had to watch this later on a different TV, because it will not work on my DVD player :(. Alas. Because it is great fun! Made me want to watch more Stargate: Atlantis so I can get to know Rodney better.
The Loyal by SDWolfpup
Loki: Wow, there are a lot of Apocaplypses today!
Me: Yeah, looks like.
I have not seen Children of Men but it seems interesting after watching this vid about life and death. Plus: bonus Clive Owen.
Women's Work by Luminosity and sisabet
Loki, upon seeing the title: I didn't think there were any female characters in Supernatural.
Me: Exactly.
Just as disturbing as I'd heard, and just as necessary.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley by Jo
I think I enjoyed this more than I would have enjoyed watching Kingdom of Heaven. A beautiful and moving eulogy.
Tamacun by Seah and Margie
Makes The Dresden Files look very entertaining indeed. Curse you, vidders, for making me want to watch all these shows I do not have!
The Adversary by astolat
So after the credits rolled on this one, I thought that the scary, traumatizing vids were probably over and went to get us cake. Then I came back and unpaused the DVD and THERE WAS DEMON BOB SAYING HE WOULD KILL AGAIN!!! ARRRRRGH!!!
Vid thus frightened the life out of me and brought back all my Twin Peaks trauma. (Dale! Oh noes!) But in a good way. Like Want, takes the POV of the Big Bad with fascinating results.
Cold As It Gets by Barkley
Um. I admit this didn't make much of an impression on me, because I'm unfamiliar with the source and was eating hummingbird cake at the time. Mmmmmm, hummingbird cake. I shall have to watch it again when I am more focussed.
Nothing New by here's luck
As Loki said, this is a great song choice for Firefly and this pairing. Poor Mal. Poor Inara. Poor 'shippers.
Another Sunday by Jescaflowne
Oh, man, this is a work of comic genius! The colours! The hand gestures! The sparkles whenever Ronon appears! Fab all around, and I've already watched it twice. (I know I said these were my first reactions, but we ended up and Loki's parents' house later in the day and we had to make them watch it as well.)
Cosmia by Dualbunny
This one simultaneously freaked me out and made me want to watch the - obviously both pretty and disturbing - movie. I cannot work out if I am horribly spoiled for the ending or not. Possibly I should just watch Pan's Labyrinth and find out.
Southwood Plantation Road by Sarah T.
Tremendously entertaining Doctor Who vid about how the Doctor is a zombie with many zombie friends and Martha Jones is MADE OF 100% PURE AWESOME.
The Trouble With Poets by Anoel
Highlander vid about Duncan and Methos having teh sexx0r and not cutting each other's heads off. And stuff. (You can tell I've only seen the source in vids ...)
Woodstock by Killa
This vid spoiled me for something I had not known about Jeremiah. The spoiler in question made me sad :(. But! That is hardly the vidder's fault. It was an excellent work, and a conclusion to the Premieres show that was both elegiac and hopeful.
Later on when I've watched the rest of the discs systematically, I may come back and point out a few of my favourites.

Date: 2007-08-27 04:38 am (UTC)Lord Peter is one of my favourite series of books.
And thanks for the reviews of the other vids as well - I'll try to look for some of them.
(now, if only someone had vidded the Sir Ian McKellan and Anthony Andrews 'Scarlet Pimpernel')

Date: 2007-08-26 11:34 am (UTC)You should totally watch more SGA *nods firmly*
Also, yeah, Children of Men was quite good, especially visually. I was rather annoyed by the inevitable divergence from the book, and there are a couple of scenes that just don't make sense plotwise, but it's both gorgeous and smart in its use of visual language and cinematography - and I say that as someone who doesn't usually *notice* any of that.
