I'd have to agree with hurry_sundown, people killing off Fraser does funny things to my respiration. This was sweet and poignant and very sad, and I thought you pulled off the reveal very skilfully.

It's customary to warn at the start of a piece if there's anything in it that might upset people (you don't have to say who dies, since obviously that would give the game away). There's a bit of debate about exactly what constitutes a 'squick', but I think in the case of the death of a major character, you have to put in a warning.
Sorry about that! I've never been in a fandom where character warnings were considered de rigueur before, but I will definitely keep this in mind for the future. (Assuming I keep killing off due South characters in fanfic, that is.)
