Non-spoilery reaction: this year's equivalent of School Reunion. Indifferent plot and variable villains (Mr. Finch was brill, his army ... less so) but the character stuff is just so good it doesn't matter.

Oh, this episode was love, for so many reasons.

Unlike many people, I had no problem with Torchwood!Jack being less ebullient than he was in his original appearances. He'd been through a lot, you have to expect a little angst here and there. It is lovely to see him get his joie de vivre back the instant he sees the Doctor again, though, and I appreciate an explanation for why our favourite Time Lord just ran off and left him. Also adored his interaction with Martha.

Every gratuitous mention of Rose in the series to date was worth it for this, quoted inaccurately from memory:

"Is that what happens, Doctor? You get sick of us and leave us behind?"

"Not if you're blond."

That is EXACTLY it. I'm now wondering if the show going on and on and ON about Rose was deliberate, so at least part of the audience would feel the same way as Jack and Martha about the whole issue.

I loved the Doctor being completely ruthless about using Jack's immortality, and that whole conversation from opposite sides of the door. ("The radiation affects flesh, not clothing." "I look good, though." Hee!) Especially when Jack used the word 'fantastic' in that loaded way, which made me all nostalgic for Nine.

Possibly even more win than the return of Jack was the return of the Master. Long expected as it is, I am delighted to see the old fellow - well, not so old now he's turned into John Simm. The Master has often been used poorly, but an anti-Doctor is such an obvious type of villain to have around that the idea is bound to keep coming back. How he works really depends on the execution, and all the signs here are good. Derek Jacobi was predictably splendid as both the tragically human Professor and the newly ressurected Master, and I adore John Simm's incarnation based on a couple of minutes of springing around and a trailer. I'm glad I gave in and watched the trailer, incidentally - usually I don't when there's a cliffhanger involved, but this one was engaging and exciting and gave away nothing at all.

WHY ISN'T IT NEXT WEEK NOW?!
