Doctor Who: "Silence Will Fall"

Following The Pandorica Opens there has been much speculation about the identity of the mysterious voice that says 'silence will fall.' Does it belong to some ultimate, hidden villain who planned this whole season's events and blew up the TARDIS? Well, maybe. I mean, something brought the TARDIS to July 26th 2010 and blew it up, it may be the same thing that says 'silence will fall.'

I think it's safe to assume that the Pandorica is not going to be destroyed by the end of the universe; there wouldn't be much of a series if that happened. If there is indeed an Ultimate Villain behind everything, they may have planned this and want the Doctor alive. On the other hand, the voice may not belong to a villain at all.

The most likely candidates for Mysterious Voice of the Year among entities we've already met would seem to be:

The TARDIS

Maybe 'silence will fall' is a warning from the ship. The thing that strikes me as odd about this one? The TARDIS having a male voice. Which is silly, since referring to her as 'old girl' and 'she' is just the Doctor's way. I doubt that TARDISes actually have gender, and she did manifest as the Brig during Zagreus. It still did not sound like her to me, though.

The Doctor

Or a future incarnation thereof, who has A Plan that involves getting stuck in a box for a long time. The relatively mundane explanation, considering.

The Dream Lord/The Valeyard

... by which I mean any evil version of the Doctor, not necessarily one of those manifestations. Entirely possible given that Amy's Choice prepared the way for this.

The Trickster

I doubt it, since he's only been a Sarah Jane Adventures villain so far and there'd be a bit of explaining to do if he did show up. Destroying the universe also doesn't seem like his sort of plan, really.

The Black Guardian

Well, maybe. I don't have much of an opinion one way or the other, here. Unlikely to have a dead bird on his head if he does come back, which I'll miss.

Rassilon

This could be his attempt to reboot the cosmos and bring back the Time Lords, but it just doesn't seem long enough since The End of Time.

The Master

The same problem as Rassilon, only multiplied about a million times. It is surely too soon for him to be back. Although if anyone was going to destroy everything in the whole universe except the Doctor ...

Omega

A surprisingly popular rumour, but how would they explain Omega to the general viewing public in an episode with so much plot and only forty-five minutes to wrap it up? He's a much more convoluted concept than the Black Guardian or the Trickster. I think this would only work if they do the reveal the end and have him get away for a rematch later, rather than focussing the story on his presence.

Davros

He was trying to destroy the universe last time we saw him, so maybe he's trying again? Would be anti-climactic and annoying if you ask me, but it would make sense. But you know what makes me think it isn't Davros? There is no way Davros would assemble all the Doctor's enemies to stuff him in a box and then not turn up to gloat. Unless he plans to gloat after he destroys the universe, which would be unusually sensible for him.

The Beast

By which I mean the one who gave his name to The Satan Pit, although that obviously wasn't Gabriel Woolf. With Omega, there's precedent in this universe for surviving being sucked into a black hole and surviving to tell the tale, and if anyone could do that it'd be the Devil. We've seen his 'son' in Torchwood and Bilis Manger is still about somewhere, so there's every chance that he or his kind still have some influence in our universe. I don't think this is very likely, but it's my crazy pet theory anyway.

Now, it's quite possible that the voice belongs to some person or entity we've never previously encountered. (Or to Prisoner Zero, or Sutehk, or Fenric. Or Soldeed.) However, I will be more surprised if it turns out to be somebody no-one has thought of than by it being anyone on this list above.

It sounds a lot like Davros. But as you say - anticlimactic and annoying if it is Davros. I keep thinking it must have something to do with the Dream Lord character (which I suppose makes it basically Valeyard's voice that we're hearing.)

Ugh, why isn't it the weekend yet?

Agreed. That would just ruin it. ;-)

I think the Dream Lord / Valeyard is a definite possibility since they introduced him in "Amy's Choice". Plus at the end of "Amy's Choice" The Doctor looks at himself and sees the Dream Lord looking back at him. Also it might be Davros since he has the same scratchy voice as the voice the said "Silence will fall" in The Doctors TARDIS but highly unlikely unless he had a teleporter like River Song in order to get out of the explosion. Omega should be a villian but highly doubt it has something to do with "the silence". Omega should be introduced as a new villain as soon as soon as "The Silence" arc is over. Anyways it should be interesting to see what Doctor Who is going to bring us this year since its being separated into different series with six to seven episodes per series

Steven Moffat has confirmed in Doctor Who Confidential that the Silence will be featured in Series 6, with its identity possibly revealed. Moffat has implied that the Silence is a group of people several times. On Doctor Who Confidential, he said "who are the Silence?",and in an interview said that Series 6 was about who "they" are, implying it to be a group or number of people and not simply one. It was later confirmed Piers Wenger in Sci Fi magazine, in reference to series 6, that the Silence is the name of a terrifying species known as Silents who posses both physical and non-physical forms

It's Moffat--I'm sure he's just messing with us and making it "sound" like it's Davros. I can't say who I think it is, but yes, I'm hoping it's not him......

So at the beginning of Amy's Choice, that very same voice is heard saying "NO" over the top of Rory speaking as the tardis is heard.

So the "NOOOOOO" is over the same time Rory's speaking. Start about 55 seconds in.
