Doctor Who: Resolution

Well, that was a bit of New Year's fun! Although it still felt weird not watching this on Boxing Day, and I wonder if the lacklustre ratings will encourage the BBC to move it back in future.

My favourite part of this episode was the Dalek reconstructing its shell just like the Doctor had to reconstruct her sonic screwdriver - lovely parallel between them, there. And my other favourite part was the conversation between Graham and Aaron, because Graham continues to be a treasure. (My other other favourite bit: Graham ringing up the Doctor grumpily because he'd been left behind and was not having with this at all.)

Plot-wise, this felt a lot like Dalek without the bunker crossed with Mark of the Beserker from The Sarah Jane Adventures, but it moved along at a nice clip and I think it's a good thing at this point for Thirteen to face a few old monsters. (Especially ones like the Daleks who could not give a toss about her current form and gender and probably did not notice any difference. Which is to say that I expect some nonsense from the Sontarans the first time she runs into them.) While it doesn't quite hit the heights of either of the stories it reminded me of, I still enjoyed it more than more Series Eleven episodes, so I'm taking that as a good sign for the future.

I am still grumpy that this was the only episode we'll see in 2019 - they just had more than a year off between Series Ten and Series Eleven, and only made eleven episodes instead of the thirteen or fourteen that have been produced in previous years. (I realise the episodes themselves have been somewhat longer, but that still adds up to fewer scripts overall.) Still, it's not like I don't have plenty of Big Finish and novels and comics to catch up on, so I suppose I'll survive ...
