Heroes 3x03: One of Us, One of Them
Oh, Japanese boys, how I do love you.
Firstly: Hiro and Ando are in a prison cell together. Cue me running around the room waving my arms in glee. Bullet-proof kink FOR THE WIN!!! Obviously it's a glass-fronted prison cell with HRG out front and Sylar just down the hall, but I will be happy if they just sit there and argue cutely for a bit. Loved their not-so-cunning plan to get the formula back and their interaction with Daphne, especially when Ando was going on about he was Hiro's best friend and they'd never be parted only to find that Hiro had already wandered off :-).
The tension between them now isn't only due to what Hiro saw in the future, but because he left Ando behind the last few times he went on a quest to save the world. Daphne is clever enough to see that Ando resents this and exploit it, and I have to say Hiro/Ando/Daphne is fast becoming my OT3. The way Daphne plays with Hiro's glasses = adorable. Also: "Can we get popcorn?" Ahahaha.
In less gleeful news, this epsiode Angela feeds Sylar a woman of colour while Matt finds that that Mr. Magical Negro has spent his WHOLE LIFE painting pictures of the white protagnonist. Dear writers: both of these things are creepy and wrong, and I'm not sure you understand why. Please at least give Mr. Magical Negro a name and an agenda not related to Matt's spriritual journey, kthnxbai.
Three episodes in and Claire's character development could go either way - it's good that she's being more proactive, demanding training from her mother. It's certainly understandable that she wants to hurt Sylar. However, if it leads to her becoming more like the leather-clad agent we saw in the future, we're going to have a storyline that suggests proactive Claire = evil Claire, and that would not make me happy.
However! It was nice seeing Micah again, albeit briefly. By the time Tracey headed for New Orleans, I was pretty sure what she'd find in that coffin, so while I'm sad to see Niki go it wasn't entirely unexpected. She got to go out a hero by saving Monica, and it seems she left plenty of sisters behind. Dr. Zimmerman called Tracey 'Barbara', who now seems to be a likely candidate for the woman in Angela's vision. That said, who knows how many were made?
I am also enjoying the HRG and Sylar buddy cop show way, way too much. The thing Sylar is really good at - y'know apart from stealing brains - is being other people, and I loved the look on Noah's face when he was pretending to be an FBI agent. The twoof them make a fun and effective team. This is all going to fall apart eventually, though, even if Noah doesn't figure out a way to kill his partner. The trouble with Sylar is that there's nothing he wants more than he wants to feel special and powerful. While he longs to believe Angela and is quick to buy into her story, he'll be equally quick to turn on her if he decides he'd rather have her ability. I just hope Mama Petrelli is keeping that in mind.

I'm already rolling my eyes at "it's okay to be a normal teenager." I mean, yeah, to an extent, and if that's what she really wanted it would be nice if she could have it (except it would make for boring TV). But the fact is that she's not normal, and that's why she was subjected to a traumatizing attack a few days ago! Wanting to know how to fight is eminently reasonable under the circumstances.

Given that she tried being a normal teenage girl and it really did not work out, an alternative approach seems highly sensible to me.

I was really creeped out by this and surprised to see so many reviews that didn't even mention it. Even without the race issues (which are HUGE), it's basic story weaving that every character should want something. As the story's going, I think I would have preferred it if he'd been a turtle.

I think they came across a definition of Magical Negro and are using it as a checklist o_0.

Maybe Mr. Magical Negro actually is a tortoise (I know they keep saying their scaly friend is a turtle, but it's a tortoise!) and Matt's just hallucinating? Or will turn out to be secretly evil? I think I would prefer one of those at this stage.

It's all the same thing in Swedish... the tortoise is the land-living kind?

Seriously though- the analogue for Claire's situation is rape victim. The options which seem available are "get over it" and "go vigilante".
Neither are really good. Self-defence classes would be the happy medium, but the writers seem to be taking us all down a very dark garden path. Not that I have a problem with that!
