Shopping Advice Sought

Please somebody talking me out of buying this. I don't need a t-shirt I can't wear in front of my parents!

Speaking of which, I am now all caught up on Saiyuki Reload and am looking for manga to buy. I've got the first two volumes of Mushishi [1] and the first of Cantarella [2], which I plan to pick up the rest of. Is there something else I should be reading?

Anime series I have enjoyed include: Trigun, Serial Experiments Lain, Hellsing, and Twelve Kingdoms. I liked what I've seen so far of Berserk and Fullmetal Alchemist. I am not much interested in high school romance or sports no matter the gender/sexual preferences of the protagonists.

[1] This is awesome, and if you like fantasy/horror stories you should go and buy it now regardless of how you feel about anime/manga in general.

[2] This is also awesome, if a story where Cesare Borgia is a bishonen whose soul has been sold to demons by his evil father sounds like a good idea to you. Incest with his sister fits the manga format perfectly! And Cesare has a boyfriend who keeps trying to kill him! AND NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI IS A SORCERER WHO TURNS INTO A MOTH!!!

But would your parents even get the reference? :p

Then just say it means SF fandom is all about the alien and other than human. They'll probably lose interest at that point. :-)

I kind of want the SERIOUS BUSINESS one XD

OMGGGGG Cantarella! I have wanted to read that since I first heard about it -- any chance I could borrow it when you're finished with it? :D

You might enjoy Excel Saga -- it's got a touch of Trigun, but with more humour. The anime was pure crack, but the manga is a little more serious in tone, and has much denser subplots. Actually, have we discussed it in the past? I have a feeling we have, and you've already seen/read it XD

Oh wait -- I remember now, you said you hadn't seen it, but you'd heard it was like people throwing wool around a room for a whole series, and then at the very end they pull on the strings and it makes a jumper XD Which is true, but I don't think they needed to be throwing the wool around for quite 26 episodes XD This was, like, the first time I met you and Ap in Koko Black (NO I AM NOT TAPE RECORDING OUR CONVERSATIONS. I just thought it was a good way of describing the series so it stuck with me XD).

Anyway, if you like you're welcome to borrow the anime from me, it's bizarro crack and a good satire of Japanese pop culture (well, of Japan, pretty much XD). It's just a pity because the dub is really good except for the two central characters :(

PS -- Also, if you're interested, I have the full series of Fullmetal Alchemist and I've watched it more times than is good for me, to you can have that too, if you like :)

Okay, so this was given to me by my ex-boyfriend who works at Media Blasters and while I was dubious at first, I read the first volume last night and it was totally awesome. It's called "Mousou Shoujo Otaku Kei" or "Fujoshi Rumi" and while it is a high school romance, the best part is that it's also about yaoi fangirls.

See, Rumi is the only girl in the art club because she thought that if she joined, she'd meet her one-and-only co-fangirl friend and they'd be able to go to Comiket and be a dojinshi team and whatever. She also thinks that secretly, the hottest guy in school and his best friend love each other, and that the hottest guy looks so much like the guy in her favorite TV show, "Full Metal Prince" (an amalgam of "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "Prince of Tennis"). One day, she is spying on them in a classroom having an wrestling match and the best friend is starting to take his shirt off. Bam! Our heroine gets an instant nosebleed, the guys rush out to investigate the noise, and the best friend accidentally kicks her in the face. The best friend takes our fangirl to the infirmary where he is so upset for kicking her in the face that he offers to do anything for her. And what does she ask for...?

You're going to have to read it to find out! ^_^

I randomly showed bits of it to my friend [livejournal.com profile] airspaniel, she who introduced me to "due South" and she totally loved it. Because that main character is so like us, and we have conversations by quoting lines from our favorite shows, just like she does, and we see slash potential almost everywhere we go, like she does...

You might dig it.

Get hold of the anime "The Wallflower", Jse name "Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge".

So these four bishonen boys are living in this gorgeous wealthy woman's house. She's decided to travel the world searching for love, so while she's gone, she asks the boys to turn her niece into a Perfect Lady ("Yamato Nadeshiko" in Japanese.) If they do, they pay no rent! For four gorgeous guys who have every woman they have ever met falling all over them, this seems like a cakewalk. Until they actually meet Sunako, a horror fangirl who is not so much *shy* as aggressively antisocial, convinced of her own ugliness and totally uninterested in doing anything to correct the situation.

I have never met an anime character I identified with as much as I identify with Sunako.

If you didn't have enough viewing before, I'm sure you have more than enough after these comments, but - you MUST see Avatar (there's even a handy yet cultishly-titled www.watch-avatar.com!). The percentage of female characters even approximates the percentage of female persons in real life. It also features compulsively watchable character and story arcs.

It's an invertebrate, it'll fit! XD

Also, Fullmetal Alchemist is love. I'm up to episode 29 (disk 8), and can start lending if you are looking for things to watch. I would very much like to put Ed in a box and age him for a couple of years, to see if he grows up into Genjo Sanzo or Watari Yutaka.

OT
