Heroes 1x16: Unexpected
Dear Heroes writers,
You know how I didn't complain when you introduced Charlie and then killed her off less than forty minutes later to give Hiro angst? That's becuse I'm happy to let a show have a free pass on that kind of thing once. Charlie is your Adira, I get that.
I also didn't complain when Eden shot herself, because that was an appropriate end for her arc. Sandra's brain damage is causing all kinds of interesting developments, even if it's not looking good for her. I was even OK with Jackie's demise in Claire's place. However, that doesn't mean you can keep on killing the female supporting cast willy-nilly.
It's like I was fine with the attempted rape subplot in Niki's story until you had another attempted rape happen to Claire. You can have one, it's only that two is gratuitous.
Killing one love interest to give your male characters angst? Completely reasonable plot development. Killing two? Please to not be sticking all your women in the refrigerator, kthnx.
Yours sincerely,
A Feminist Fan.
... there's that rant out of the way.
In less rage-inducing plot developments, Peter gets better at controlling his abilities. Loved him coming back at Claude and throwing him off the roof *g*. I'd been wondering if he'd absorbed Sylar's powers when they encountered each other, and apparently he did. Makes me curious whether the power has to be in use around Peter before he can borrow it, or if its mere presence is enough.
Claire is forced to admit what she knows when her mother's condition worsens, even if the doctor won't believe her. I loved her response to the question of whether there was domestic violence in the house - because it is domestic violence, just by proxy and with superpowers. Mr. Bennet means well, but as Claire says that doesn't mean he can just say sorry and have it all go away. And yet I still felt terrible for him when she pushed him away.
Matt Parkman's slide into grey continues as he teams up with Ted Sprague and new addition Hana Gitelman to force some answers out of Mr. Bennet. Am so looking forward to Company Man!
I sincerely hope that Mohinder isn't going to keep driving Sylar around the country so he can eat brains more conveniently. Once may be considered an accident, twice looks like carelessness. Dale Smither sussed that there was something wrong about 'Zane' almost immediately, hopefully he'll catch on soon. Perhaps he's just blinded by hormones.
As for Hiro and Ando .... waaaah! Loved that they make up while hiding in the luggage compartment of a bus during a shoot-out. ("Did you powers work? I had my eyes closed." "So did I." Awwww.) And then Hiro tells Ando to take the Versa back to the rental agency and go home.
I can understand why. But Hiro, sweetheart, Ando-kun is your sidekick. He is not luggage. You can't drag him from Japan to Texas to New York to Vegas and then mail him home because you're frightened of losing him. Yes, he's been complaining that he wants to leave from day one, but he always says 'I think we should go back to Japan.' He's obviously distressed at the idea of leaving you to do this on your own. (Vulcan sign! Waaah!) I doubt you're going to get rid of him that easily.
Also adored the cameo from Stan Lee. I love this show.

It was Christopher Eccleston's idea to have Claude call Peter "friend" right before they were attacked. It made Claude's sudden departure much sadder--he was just starting to trust someone else again, and maybe moving away from the mentality of "People suck," and then *that* happened.
Makes me curious whether the power has to be in use around Peter before he can borrow it, or if its mere presence is enough.
I think that he can absorb the power, but he has to know about it in order to use it (unless the original superpowered-person is around, like in Homecoming).
I'm torn about the Simone thing--I can understand why people would be outraged, from a feminist point of view. But I honestly thought that the actress was *so* bad--the weakest link in the cast by a large, large margin--and had so little chemistry with *any* of her co-stars that I was rather glad to see her go.

I was upset when they briefly introduced a very cool female character just so that Sylar could kill her; not sure if you've seen that but I suspect from your remarks that you have. OK, it's nice that even the cannon fodder gets a personality but still. I wish she'd become part of the team because she would have been awesome - and she wasn't beautiful and plastic which gave her huge points in my book.

And that's on top of the murder of the female mechanic, who was terrific in her brief appearance and who I wouldn't have minded at all seeing more of. (And not just because my reaction to her powers was "hey! Daredevil!" *g*) But that did make sense, you know? Sylar wants to kill all the people with powers, he's traveling with someone who's trying to find those people--the odds were definitely that he would kill at least one person given that situation, and it just happened to be her.
Whereas Simone just left me thinking, "okay, she's just died the most stupid, unfair death ever. What was the point?" It didn't give her any agency (unlike Eden), it didn't seem like an inevitable Grand Tragedy resulting from the flaws of the characters, it wasn't even because there are dangerous people out there...it was just a stupid accident. And you know, I could never get interested in Simone, I was not sorry to lose her from the cast, but dammit she was trying, and she thoroughly deserved better than that.
Am so looking forward to Company Man!
I really, really want to hear your reactions to that one.

*cracks up* No, the road trip will not continue indefinitely. (Except in the sense that this entire show is a never-ending series of road trips.) Some of Mohinder's best material (IMO) is coming up in "Parasite," although I will remain silent on whether he develops a brain.
And then Hiro tells Ando to take the Versa back to the rental agency and go home.
At the time, I was actually incredibly relieved by this. Because a misleading solicit had left me thinking that Ando was going to die, and I was terrified. --which puts me in the same position as Hiro, actually, although I didn't think about it at the time. It is an understandable response, but Ando is an adult and gets to make his own decisions, to say nothing of how well Hiro can function without him. I might feel differently if Hiro was an experienced professional and Ando was going to get in his way/slow him down, but...not so much. :) Also, even if I thought it was the lesser of two evils, separating Hiro and Ando is just wrong. *nods decisively*

As has been said by others, I think he absorbs it subconsciously, but isn't aware he has it unless he saw it demonstrated first.
Company Man is awesome and probably the season's best individual episode. It's not the one I love best, but then those are two different categories; I admire the hell out of it, though. Looking forward to your comments, but looking forward even more to your comments on the next one after that, Parasite.
Hana Gitelman: I should warn you that we only see glimpses of her on tv whereas she gets full character development and action in the webcomics. Somewhat frustrating, that.
No comment on Mohinder due to future plot developments.
