Heroes 1x13: The Fix
I have reached that stage with my VividCon vid where I don't care about anything except VIDVIDVIDVIDVID. The only reason I've managed to sleep and eat and work and watch Heroes today is that sometimes the vid has to render *g*. Incidentally, anyone want to see the nearly final draft version?
selenak?
elynross?
Anyway, the laptop is next to me rendering. (Yes, I'm still at work. It's Sunday, and since no-one ever wants to buy crappy internet on Sunday, I brought it with me. So I could VIDVIDVID and also watch Heroes) You get some commentary while I wait ...
Even more than usual, this episode is all about the Daddy Issues. We meet Hiro's Oto-san for the first time. Claire's relationship with Mr. Bennet becomes ever more strained as she decides that her bear collection should 'migrate'. D.L. struggles to be a good father to Micah. Meanwhile, Peter rejects his brother's help and seeks a strange kind of father figure in Claude.
I'm looking forward to finding out more about Hiro's father - he does not look happy that his son is running around New York breaking into museums and trying to save the world. I don't see Hiro giving up, though. He's not going to abandon his quest for anything, or his friend either. "Release the unspecial Ando!" is one of my favourite sentences of the entire series thus far, capturing that blend of funny and touching that Hiro does so well. And, awwwww, "you came back for me." Well, of course he did. Every hero needs his sidekick, even if the sidekick just wants to go home to Japan.
Niki and D.L. both struggle to be good parents. Niki has removed herself from her family for their own good - the only sensible course given that Jessica had hurt both of them - and now has to face the struggle to make herself better so she can see them again. D.L. has to work out how to relate properly to his son. I'll be fascinated to see how he reacts to Micah's theft - we know he's an ex-con, but it must be tempting to have a son who can talk to ATM machines.
Claire makes real progress this episode by finding her biological mother, apparently a pyrokinetic. That got me wondering again about the nature of superpowers in the Heroes universe. While there seems to be one special gene sequence that gives you powers, the powers themselves don't seem to be inherited. We've now run across three sets of characters who are related to each other - Claire, Nathan and Meredith, Nathan and Peter, plus Niki, D.L and Micah - and nobody's powers have anything to do with anyone else's. This isn't usually the case in, say, the Marvel Universe.
It makes me wonder how people end up with the exact powers they have. Are the specific manifestations genetic, or do people subconsciously choose them? Nathan gets his powers when he leaps out of a car in the middle of an accident. Claire puts her hand through a glass door, and the next thing we know the gash has healed. Sylar wants what other specials have, and finds a way to get it. D.L. Hawkins walks out of prison. Jessica/Niki wants to be strong to protect herself. The evidence isn't conclusive, but it is interesting. Did Hiro give himself the ability to bend time and space by wanting it?

George Takei had a blast in that role. Also, pay attention to his car's license plate. It's the number of the Enterprise.
"Release the unspecial Ando!"
Yes, adored that, too. Aw, Hiro.

Ohhhhhh, that's a fascinating idea, and it totally works for me. Plus nobody ever had it before (that I know of), and it would fit. I.e. the gene itself allows for superpowers, but the power comes from the individual's needs and/or psychology.
Since you've now met Meredith: Here's my Nathan/Meredith backstory (http://selenak.livejournal.com/292650.html) (no spoilers).

The unrelatedness of the powers always bothered me, but as far as I'm concerned, you've sussed it.
