Steven Universe: A Totally Relevant Set of Lion Questions
In preparation for new episodes, I have completed my great Steven Universe rewatch! Every episode from Gem Glow all the way to Legs From Here to Homeworld, in order.
It's a show that deeply rewards rewatching in light of later information, as a person who always enjoys putting their arms above their head and saying 'IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!'
And after one hundred and fifty-three episodes and eleven shorts, my favourite twist is still that Lion ... is a lion. Because, I mean, what else would he be? All the evidence is right there, but I still never saw it coming. Relatedly, my favourite foreshadowing that I only spotted this time through is Vedalia telling Greg he'd better hope his girlfriend's magic powers could bring him back from the dead if anything happened to Sour Cream. Because, hey, guess what! Somewhere out there is an alternative universe (pun totally intended) where Greg is pink and immortal.
One of the other joys of rewatching is that I appreciate many of the character arcs much more over a long stretch of time. Lars used to irritate me, but now that I know we spent so much time watching him be an insecure jerk so that we could better appreciate his transformation into an awesome zombie space pirate with a portal in his head, I am here for that.
One of the things I still await is an episode where we actually see Lion's backstory in full - it intrigues me that Rose apparently only ever did this once, if the lack of other trees in the Mane Dimension is anything to go by. Did she make him this way on purpose, or by accident like Steven did with Lars? Did she even know that she could raise organic creatures from the dead? Is that a thing all of the Diamonds can do? How old is Lion, and was he part of the pride we saw in flashback in Buddy's Book?
I mean, sure, I have plenty of questions about the nature of Diamonds and Homeworld and when Jasper will return and whether we've been watching Ronaldo be a jerk for some reason, too. But really I just always want more Lion.
