Did he teach her to control her powers rather than repress them because of his experiences with Raven, perhaps? And of course forewarning from reading Logan's mind.
Yes, I think a combination of those two factors is very likely.
Agreed, 100%. Because he is SUCH a failboat as a young man. And actually, having just rewatched X1-3 (all right, I just skimmed that last one because UGH), he's STILL a failboat as an older man. So it takes him a really long time to get it pounded into his head that he just shouldn't follow any of his own bright ideas. At least, not without consulting with Charles, first. What the hell, Erik.
It's kind of hilarious and sad at the same time that things might have gone about 2000% better if they just hadn't bothered to break Erik out of prison. (Well, maybe in some ways its a good thing, in that some issues got resolved and Mystique got to conspicuously not kill Trask on TV. That poor stadium will never be the same again, though, never mind the White House.)
And, yes, Erik was apparently like that until 2013 or so in the original timeline, which tellingly seems to be when he and Charles team up again. Not that Charles doesn't get things wrong himself, but at least none of his plans involve wrecking major landmarks, almost accidentally melting half of New York, attempted genocide, or encouraging Dark Phoenix ...
And like you, I love that so many characters are back, including Jean and Scott, and am fascinated by what happened to cause all that. I expect to see some fanfiction authors getting on that ASAP.
