The way it works is this: everyone nominates three small fandoms. Then when you sign up, you make requests from four fandoms, and must also offer to write four. (The reason people can only nominate three but must offer four is to stop people picking four things so obscure nobody else is interested in them.)
Come match up time, everyone is sent a set of requests - normally, only one of the fandoms will match with what you offered to write, although sometimes you get lucky and have heard of more than one of them. (People also sometimes include 'safety' fandoms - stuff like songs, music videos, and films that can be acquired and absorbed relatively fast in case a writer realises that they can't actually write the thing they matched on.)
