One of the things that consistently surprises me about reactions to new series Doctor Who is the assumption that RTD's formula is the only way the show will ever be done from now on.

This always provokes something of a surprised "does not compute!" reaction from me, too, because I've always figured that Doctor Who is a lot like the weather: if you don't like it right now, just wait, and it'll change. I find that taking that attitude helps me not get too worked up about the things in the current version that I don't like, and helps me to relax and enjoy the ones I do.

For the record, I disagree with you on the Eric Saward formula, as I happen to kind of love that particular era. But I think that's yet another example of why it's a good thing that Doctor Who changes constantly. It really can be all things to all people, just not all at once. :)

for me Eighth Doctor stories work best when they're unconventional.

From the (probably too many) EDAs I've read, I agree with you. Some of the most unconventional ones are freakin' brilliant, but too many of 'em are Yet Another Paint-By-Numbers Adventure Story. I swear, I've just read three books in a row about spies attempting to get their hands on time travel technology. Ho-very-much-hum.
